Eric Michaels walked into Tarden’s television and stereo shop and was shocked by how outdated it looked. There was actually plywood on the walls, and Grand Funk Railroad’s Some Kind of Wonderful was playing on a small transistor radio that sat on a shelf behind the counter. Even the salesman looked like he was straight out of 1977 instead of 1997. He had long, dark sideburns, greasy black hair combed back, a pot belly and a polyester suit that looked right at home on him. The effect was comical.

Eric shook the hand, though he made a mental note to wash his own before he ate again. Maybe this wasn’t such a good idea, he thought. I’m looking fo-

A TV, right? We’ve got ‘em. We got all kinds, the salesman, who looked to be in his late thirties, pitched as he motioned to all the televisions lined up against the walls and setting on display stands. If we don’t have it, we can order it for ya. That we can. He nodded and smiled. His teeth had seen better days.

Eric smiled right back, though. The guy seemed friendly enough. Actually, a man who came into my work men-

    I’m twenty-nine, and I’ve been wi-

Christ! I’m sorry! How rude! I never introduced myself. I’m Ed Moyer. I own and operate this here establishment. Tarden was my mother’s maiden name, if you want to know. The hand went back out as he mentioned the shop’s name.

Eric shook the outstretched hand again. Eric Michaels.

A pleasure, Ed said, pumping Eric’s hand for all it was worth. What can I do for ya?
