About this ebook

Giuseppe Masseria was a Mafia strongman in New York City, an associate of Chicago's famed gang chieftain, Al Capone. Masseria's April 1931 murder was an especially brutal one, but one that Masseria knew was likely in the offing. My book details the factions of the Italian Mafia in New York City in the early years of the Twentieth Century. Giuseppe was among the Italians who warred with the Castellammarese Sicilians who were led by Stefano Magaddino and others. On numerous occasions Masseria was "put on the spot" only to survive assassination attempts. The Coney Island hit was the work of two Mafia button men, underlings at the time, who later rose to the top of the crime world of New York City.

Giuseppe Masseria was murdered by his rivals on April 15, 1931. Described as an associate of Alphonse Gabriel Al Capone (January 17, 1899-January 25, 1947), newspapers quoted police as saying that Masseria was the biggest gangster of them all. Lawmen believed that his murder would incite a gang war in New York City.

Masseria was killed in coldblooded fashion while he was thumbing a deck of cards inside a nondescript Italian restaurant in Coney Island, New York called the Nuova Villa Tammaro. It happened on the evening of April 15th. The address of the building was 2715 West 15th Street.

Also known as Joe the Boss, Giuseppe lived in Harlem. He had arrived at the eatery before 3 p.m. in his steel armored car that was equipped with plate glass windows that were an inch in thickness.
