CAUGHT IN A WEB: Changed by Destiny is a great story to read! A true story of how I suffered such horror. It will make you cry because of what I had to endure as a child and how I escaped from the web that I once was trapped in.Filled with wisdom and compassion, Caught in a Web is Ethel Oden’s gift to victims of childhood sexual abuse and anyone struggling with hurts inflicted by others. She offers inspiration to others who were themselves abused but found healing, through whose wounds we too can be healed.Sexual abuse knows no religious or social boundaries. Caught in a Web is an intensely personal and specific look at this form of abuse. Ethel Oden explores the secret lament of the soul damaged by sexual abuse and lays hold of the hope buried there by the One whose unstained image we all bear. This book is an invaluable tool in understanding and responding to the needs of individuals who have been the victims of trauma in their lives that has had the effect of impairing their ability to have healthy relationships. The book is powerful!!! This is a book I would keep on my bookshelf to refer to others who have suffered abuse. I highly recommend this book.

BOOK REVIEW

A Louisiana woman's poignant story of a life of abuse and her eventual escape.

Oden's wrenching debut memoir doubles as a self-help guide to inspire abused women to take control of their lives. She begins by outlining her early life in Collinston, La.; her overbearing father forced her to work the fields at the age of six and bullied her constantly. Only a month after her mother died, her father wed a woman who proceeded to abuse Oden physically and mentally—beating, berating and refusing to feed her. Her stepmother insisted that Oden wash all the family's clothes by hand, which made Oden's hands tender and sore. The author writes that her early years led her to later traps of abuse, observing that suffering at her hands led me to believe that life had nothing to offer but misery. Upon graduating from high school in 1968, Oden escaped to live with her aunt in Chicago, but she recognized that the scars of abuse would remain in her heart no matter where she went. She worked with her aunt in her hat shop, where they spent most of each day. Oden soon found herself flitting in and out of relationships with unsuitable men. Her tale reaches its nadir when she meets Jay, a man who at first seems perfect—until he reveals his true self as a violent alcoholic and substance abuser. The author's straightforward, unadorned prose cuts right to the issues, and her brutal honesty, both with herself and her readers, is compelling and effective. Readers who have been abused will especially relate and find comfort in Oden's story and her intense desire to share it. The author emerges the heroine of her own life, as she takes control and allows herself to feel happiness that no one else let her feel.

A heartbreaking story about finding hope in the darkness of abuse.

Introduction

The purpose of my story is mostly to help young women and anyone else caught in some kind of abusive situation, or who has had a dysfunctional life, and also those who are caught in situations they feel they cannot escape. This is a story that will give you some hope about your circumstances and instruct you to think about what choices you should make before you make them. Choices can become webs, because the consequences of those choices can be very difficult to undo, and sometimes those consequences last a lifetime. I hope this book will give you some insight to your life and show you how to make the right choices.

Chapter 1

My Life Story

I was born in Collinston, Louisiana, in the year 1950. I was born a twin, but my sister died shortly after she was born, and I ended up with a broken leg when I was still just a baby. It was as though some evil force had planned to destroy my life before it started.

My life started at the age of six, because my father was a farmer, and I had to start working in the cotton fields. My father also raised hogs and, cows and grew beans, corn, you name it. He could grow anything, and I worked hard to bring in the crops.

When I wasn't working in the fields, I loved to run and play with my brothers. We would run through the woods, jumping and swinging on the long, thick vines that hung from the trees. It was fun, and the woods were cool during the summer, so that was where we liked to play most.

One particular day, we were playing in the woods with our cousin. He would bring box lunches that looked so good and he never shared them with us, so this time I decided to trick him out of his lunch. I told him that the plant he was sitting near was poison ivy, but that if he gave me his lunch, I would make sure he didn't get a rash. My cousin was so afraid that he started screaming and pulling off his clothes to run home. By the time he got there, he had completely undressed himself. He thought this would keep him from getting the poison ivy rash. The truth was, it wasn't poison ivy, it was only a weed. My cousin's mother told my mother what had happened and how my cousin had showed up at home undressed. I'd had no idea how much that lunch would cost me! I never tricked my cousin out of his lunch again.

Those were the good old days, playing in the woods with my brothers and cousin, when I didn't have to work in the cotton fields. When I worked in the fields it would be just about daybreak and it was a job that I hated. The cotton and the leaves would be wet from the dew, which made the cotton soggy and heavy. The sun hadn't yet been out to dry the cotton, so I had to pick the cotton while it was still wet. I picked cotton until the sun went down. I didn't like the thick leaves from the cotton,
