Introduction
If you asked most people about healthy eating, they'd probably mention unappealing foods like wheat germ, kale, salad with no dressing and boring steamed fish. The reality doesn't have to be like that, however. There are ways to enjoy even the richest and most comforting meals without hurting your health. Real healthy eating isn't about constant denial. It's about balancing the foods you enjoy most with appropriate portions and plenty of fresh ingredients. After all, it wasn't until processed convenience food took over that Americans had to fight obesity and similar conditions on the scale that we do today.
The key to learning how to eat well lies in awareness. If you simply consume what's in front of you, day after day, you're sure to experience all kinds of problems. Too many people mindlessly stop for fast food or eat frozen meals without asking themselves what goes into the things that they're eating. Over time, they consume far too much, hurting their health and causing significant weight gain. This can induce metabolic syndrome, diabetes, and a huge range of other issues.
Others try to improve their health by cutting out major food groups. They may deny themselves fats, cut out all the best proteins, or ban carbohydrates in a quest for a better body. Some choose to eat only food that has been certified organic by a third party, while others stick to a diet composed entirely of uncooked veggies. These approaches tend to work pretty well at first, but almost invariably fail in the end. That's because your body is designed to crave a wide variety of foods. When you go without for too long, you find yourself craving all the foods on your forbidden
list. Most people eventually drop these diets, feeling helpless about their ability to control their own health.
There's no need for you to take either approach, however. Instead, consider looking for the right balance to achieve good physical health without neglecting taste, comfort or your cravings. If you eat good quality food made from whole, natural ingredients, you'll be surprised how many things stay on the acceptable
list. There's no reason to cut out meats, dairy, grains, potatoes or even sugar if you eat them in moderation. All you need to do is figure out where the balance lies for your individual body.
This book is designed to help you do just that. Divided into two parts, it can help you find the sweet spot between the foods you love most and the ones that boost your body's natural strengths. The first section focuses on healthy but hearty comfort foods. These strengthening meals will support good health while keeping you happy and hopeful. The second part of the book contains information about detoxification. Choosing a periodic detox diet is one excellent way to ensure a healthy balance and keep your body free of damaging substances.
In the first part of this volume, you'll learn that comfort foods don't have to hurt your health. You've probably been told that classic home cooking favorites like grilled cheese, bread pudding and fried chicken are off limits when it comes to eating healthy. The reality is a little different, however. You don't have to give up all your old favorites as long as you understand the best ways to prepare and eat them.
When you make these comfort foods with the right ingredients and enjoy them in appropriate amounts, they can be part of any healthy diet plan. Just make sure that you look for whole grains, fresh vegetables and responsibly-grown ingredients whenever you can. Then enjoy a traditional grilled cheese sandwich with the addition of fresh bacon, tomato and tasty greens. Try a dish of all American macaroni and cheese with a lush, crisp salad or get your vegetables in a classic chicken pot pie made from fresh poultry.
Incorporating lots of real, unprocessed food in your diet is the best way to cut out toxins and rebalance your body, but it won't undo years of damage. That's why you need to understand the principles of detoxification, too. If you're like most people, you've spent much of your life consuming low quality foods made for ease of consumption and designed to keep you addicted. These products are loaded down with the kind of toxins that slowly build up in your body. Over time, they can leave you feeling tired, achey and just not right. They can even increase your risk of developing certain kinds of diseases.
By detoxifying, you'll be giving your body a break from all of that. You'll focus on lower calorie foods that can help you lose weight and reduce built-up waste in your body. You'll also improve your digestion, enjoy better skin with fewer blemishes, and gain more energy. While a detoxification diet isn't right for long term use, it is the perfect option for anyone who wants to clean up his or her body and start feeling a whole lot better.
The second part of this book contains everything you need to know in order to accomplish a safe, healthy detox. It provides tips to help you stick to the process, tells you the best foods to eat while you're on the diet, and provides plenty of great recipes to allow you to enjoy it. While many traditional comfort foods are off the table for people who are detoxing, you can still enjoy delicious vegetarian sausage
with breakfast, have a rich, Tuscan vegetable bean soup for lunch, and relax in the evening with salmon fillets or chicken with wild rice. There's even a meal plan included to help you figure out how to arrange your healthy detox meals, and plenty of snack and drink recipes to stave off that afternoon slump.
Detox diets don't have to be limiting, and they're a great way to improve your overall health. When you combine them with sensible day to day eating practices, you're opening the door to a better, more sustainable lifestyle!
Section 1: Comfort Food Diet Introduction
Comfort food is meant to bring out a special feeling in all who eat it, as it creates a sense of nostalgia. It reminds us of the days where we would play with our friends from dawn until dusk and mom would have a special meal waiting when we returned home.
For many, these meals remain a comforting reminder of family and everything that it means. These recipes remind us of simpler times where the entire family would gather around the table and all seemed right with the world. In today's society, it can be difficult to find time to make the meals that mom used to make, but there are ways to make the cooking process much easier. Eating comfort food does not mean that you have to spend the entire day slaving over a hot stove, as many of the recipes allow you to cook outstanding and comforting food without sacrificing your entire day.
At the same time, it is important to remember the things that go into creating a healthy diet. Comfort food might not have the best reputation in that regard, but you do not have to eat unhealthily just because you love comfort food. Much of eating healthy has to do with the ingredients that you use and portion control. In past generations, we did not have this information regarding these ingredients,
