    Ghost Hunting in the Galley

Howard stood in his cabin, looking at a layout of the Universe on the large wall screen. The room was beeping an obnoxious warning at him again. He pushed the button, muting the message. He knew what it was about and it was unimportant.

He stepped over the pile of tourist gee-gaws he’d gotten on Masia 36 to move closer to the screen. His third leg grazed a pile of books containing ghost stories he’d borrowed from the Captains’ library, knocking them over.

He really would find some floor space.

    Soon.

A smell of rotting leaves came from one of the piles. He’d forgotten to eat that dinner two days ago in a panic over his new duties. The room would send cleaning bots out soon. He dug through the pile until he found the offending take away package he’d gotten from the commissary.

He tiptoed across the room to the disposal chute and tossed it in.

    It really was foul smelling.

    Howard forced himself to concentrate.

He’d been given a crucial assignment and there was no time to lose.

He was finally in charge of a passenger entertainment. An impromptu one.

    Tomorrow night.

To celebrate a holiday known only on Earth.

    Halloween.

    This would be fun.

If only his parents weren’t on board. At sixty four he was old enough to shake off their influence, but Gassians never really left home, did they?

He scratched the thick blue fur on his arms and sniffed. He should shower. When he didn’t his scent, which humans always likened to gardenias, became too overpowering for them. Like some of the older humans whose noses didn’t work well and they wore too much perfume.

He looked around the room. A small footpath wound around through piles of books and things Howard collected from every planet, moon or asteroid where he’d had shore leave. Rocks, ceremonial objects, bags. He really liked bags.

Gassians had so much hair and wore no clothes because that would be silly. But bags were really very useful for carrying things in. Especially since he collected so many things.

He paced back and forth along the footpath, his long tail tangling in the piles. Where should he stage the ghost hunt? The ballrooms were too formal. The pool areas were too wet and the ectoplasm he wanted to create would disappear.

He had half a day to come up with a place. Prep needed to begin this evening, while the ball
