About this ebook

Chance Becket has spent all of his thirty years hiding his unsavoury youth behind a society marriage and a prestigious position with the War Office. But now the widower must confront his past and return to the coast, where the ghosts of his childhood still linger.

Governess Julia Carruthers is delighted to be in charge of Chance's young daughter and eager to escape the confines of London. But when Julia sees something she should not, she wonders if Chance's sudden intentions are prompted by desire or his need to protect his family's secrets.

Chance Becket has become slightly estranged from his eccentric family. After his wife's death he decides to return to his family home to give his daughter a chance at a family life. He finds Julia Carruthers to nanny his daughter in desperation on both their parts, he finds himself very attracted to her. When they're at his family home she finds that despite his veneer of respectability his family is nothing if unconventional. Children gathered by their father and rescued from a life of misery. A family where there is an abundance of love, but can he fit back in and will she fit to both? It being Napoleonic England there's also smuggling and espionage to spice up the plot. The setup is a bit hokey and many of the excuses are a bit strained but it's a fun read. Some of the twists and turns took me by surprise.
