Solutions to Puzzles
Introduction
Checkmate is the heart of successful chess. Recognizing when a king is vulnerable to a devastating attack is as important as it gets when playing chess. Every chess player needs to develop the skills necessary to launch a successful attack on the opposing king. We also need to develop the defensive resouces to avert such an attack on our own king. Although this last point is not the direct subject of this workbook, solving the puzzles here will certainly help you see when a mating attack is heading your way. If you see it in time, you can take steps to avoid it. Indeed, developing a fine-tuned sense of danger is essential both on and off the chessboard.
One of the main elements in playing chess well is pattern recognition. Many of the mates in this book fall into well-known patterns. The more of these patterns you know, the easier it is to find them hidden in positions over the board, and the more likely you will emerge victorious. As you go through this book, look for recuring themes and patterns that you can use in your own games.
Checkmate is a very simple concept: one of the two kings is under attaack and has no means of escape. The game is over. We never actually remove the king from the board during the game; the king’s inevitable demise is sufficient. Although the concept is a simple one, the implementation can sometimes be quite complex.
