      Materials

      Watercolor Paints

      They are transparent in colors, and are available in Tubes and Pans, and you can buy it by piece or by set, and every Manufacturer is different from another, so choose a good brand and quality of watercolor paints. In our exercises we will use Watercolors that comes in tube and we’re going to mix them with a small amount of water, for sure it will be fun.

      Remember Basic colors are Red, Yellow and Blue, but you may see some colors with names like Alizarin Crimson, Lemon Yellow and Cerulean or Ultramarine blue, don’t get confuse with it, as it has a basic colors which vary in Hues, Saturation and Values.

      I used a Reeves Watercolour Set of 18 fine watercolors; it’s a good choice for beginners.

      Brushes

      They come in natural and synthetic, natural brush was taken from animal hair: squirrel, weasel, Pony and other land mammals. While synthetic brush is made of synthetic fibers like Nylon. Advantage of synthetic brush includes, less deterioration in terms of time and easy to clean.

      For our works, we’re going to use the following:

      A. Round Red Sable or Nylon Brushes- nos.0,2,4,6, and 8, used for all our watercolor works.

      B. Flat Bristle brush-nos.1 and 3, use to create highlights, use it carefully not to ruin your watercolor paper, you can trim bristles to accommodate your work or use a worn out bristle brush.

      C. Camel brush or a Chinese brush (bamboo) - a small to medium range of brush will be use, for create soft edges in your work.

      D. Flat Soft or Nylon Brush- A wide width is what you need a 1 inch is suffice, use for covering wide areas.

      Large Flat Brush

      Use when stretching the Watercolor Paper, need to be wet with water when applying.

      Watercolor Pad

      There are many Watercolor Paper that are available for you to use, comes in different sizes, use 200gsm and acid free, when choosing brands of watercolor paper make sure that it has good quality. For our work we need 9x12 size and acid free.

      White Acrylic Paint

      Use for painting highlights and cover mistakes.

      Masking Fluid or Liquid Frisket

      Use to mask your work, it will resist the water on your work, thus preserve the white of the watercolor paper underneath, can be rub later after work. Take note that you have to have another brush for the masking fluid only, don’t use your Watercolor Painting Brush

      Mechanical Pencil and Kneaded

      Mechanical pencil-Use when drawing your outline in the watercolor paper, choose the 4H lead, so that it will not smudge much compared if you use B grade lead.

      Kneaded eraser-it can’t damage the watercolor paper, when you erase any mistake you made to it.

      Watercolor Pencil

      Use to make details to your work, good when doing hair or fur.

      Palettes

      There are many kinds of palettes: made of plastic and aluminum. You can choose palettes with lids, which is good for storing paints after used. Make sure that the puddle is large enough to accommodate your work.

      Masonite or Flexi-glass Board

      This is where you going to attach your watercolor paper on elevated position; you can also use Flexi-glass. Choose a size that can accommodate 9x 12 work.

      Masking or Artist tape

      Use when you’re going to attach your watercolor paper in the Masonite or Flexi-glass board.

      Tissues or Piece of Clean cloth

      Use to remove excess water or color from your brush; also you can use Tissue to lift some colors to soften the edge for large areas and also for various effects.

      Measuring Spoon

      Use to measure the water when mixing watercolors.

      Plastic Cups
