About this ebook

I have always wanted to have a go at trying to write an epic poem. The thing is though, that I've discovered that I have neither the talent, patience or imagination to write a truly epic poem. So these poems are an exercise in longform poetry. None of them have a story per se, I was just interested in seeing how long I could write a poem for. Some of them are longer than others, for that reason.

    Birdsong

THE FINAL ROAD OUT OF ROME

    A fine truce to be

    Up in arms

    Described in error as

    Reductive

    The how and the why

    Off loaded as excess baggage

    The where and the when

    Disengaged from the conversation

    Only the who escaped

    An easy asphyxiation

    Saved

By a unique entry in the ledger

    Hidden on the left

By a complex series of equations

    That still baffle many

    To this day

    The neon lights of a

    Broken establishment

    Shine brighter in the heretofore

    Than the whereafter

    Copper sings translucent

A bare negation of the facts

    That spread sparse

    Like truth in advertising

    A harmless calibre in motion

    Forcing a rise

    Reducing a goal

    Copper shines turquoise

    And bottles a rare grin

On the face of a decent soldier

    Barely looking

    Let alone dealing with

    Comprehension

As I juggle the shocks of others

    I sometimes wonder

About the course of true grit

And if it can really be taught

    By no less a dignitary

    Than commiseration

For if a pat on the back

    And an awkward smile don’t

    Fill the void

What is left of a kind word?

Playing out like a blues song

    This eloquent solo

    Shifts keys

    And breaks time

As it weaves a spell of

    Indifference

    Over a harsh audience

    So what went wrong?

    Too fine?

    Too intoxicating?

    Or just not quite

    There yet?

    Harsh words

    Harsh thoughts

The melting of a distant heart

    Not enough to chaperone

    Desire

    But wait!

The sound of one hand clapping!

Ah, truly beauty has not left

    This earth

    Not as yet
