After spending over thirty five years in education I discovered my love for writing and decided that it was time to retire to create my own magical beach city. Modeled after Redondo Beach, California, where I grew up - I’ve had a super time introducing readers to the Merriman community. A family of witches filled with love, magic and never ending adventure, these three sisters and their extended family members are constantly running into one paranormal problem after another. My latest book, Murder By Magic, is my first attempt at writing a cozy mystery and I hope that you find as much enjoyment reading it as I did writing it. Feel free to stop by my website where you can see my other books and learn about my love for sewing and traveling. I even included a picture of me and one of my troll friends that I met on my recent trip to Bergen, Norway. www.meriamwilhelm.comI hope that you find your own magic soon...until then, you can borrow mine!

This book is dedicated to the many wonderful teachers I had the pleasure of working with at Silver Spur Elementary School. From each of you I learned and grew as both a person and a professional.
And to Mrs. Mary Lou Yoakum who was my oldest son's Kindergarten Preppie teacher; an incredible educator, a great lady and a wonderful role model for parents to follow!

Chapter 1
Introduction
If the Kindergarten Train whistle is sounding loud and clear for your child, then it's time to get them ready to climb aboard. Kindergarten today is nothing like it used to be and preparing both yourself and your child for the adventures ahead can a cause any parent to feel anxious or uncertain. Many parents question whether their child is old enough, mature enough or whether they have the skills necessary to begin school. Your youngster is entering a new station in their life and they will look to you to be both their fellow traveler and their greatest support.
From the first moment your baby was placed in your arms you have been preparing for the day that they would begin school. Each time you shared an encouraging smile, applauded first steps or cheered on their earliest words, you have been helping them to develop their communication and socialization skills, vocabulary and general knowledge all in preparation for kindergarten. You are their first and most important teacher and on this lengthy trip, you will serve as their personal conductor
.
A conductor is a railway train crew member responsible for operational and safety duties that do not involve actual operation of the train.
Although you may not be driving a real train, it will be your job to keep your child safe and on track
throughout their journey. You will be who they will look to as they venture out of the safety of their home into the exciting world of school.
You might be surprised to see just how many similarities there actually are between the role of a train conductor and that of a parent preparing their child for kindergarten. Jump on board and take a look at a few of them.
Conductor - Makes sure the train stays on schedule
Parent - Before the school year begins, make sure that your child is introduced to a schedule.
Establishing and practicing a specific time to get up, to get dressed & to have breakfast will
make the transition into school much smoother. Talk about how your child will be getting to and
from school and assure them that all will run smoothly if you both just stay on schedule.
Conductor - Cargo are transported appropriately
Parent - Ensure that kids are picked up and dropped off at the appropriate school times.
Conductor - Completes en-route paperwork
Parent - Complete all necessary school registration, enrollment and communication paperwork
for kindergarten.
Conductor - Ensuring the train follows safety rules
Parent - Instruct, model and reinforce everyday rules, values and decision making skills that will
Conductor - Controlling train's reverse movement
Parent - Teach your child the necessary skills to be able to communicate effectively and
successfully function in changing environments and within new boundaries.
Conductor - Coupling or uncoupling of train cars
Parent - Make sure that your child can function happily whether connected to or separated from
a parent, sibling or care giver.
Conductor - Carrying out running repairs
Parent - Maintain constant communication between home and school ensuring opportunities to
fix
any breakdowns along the way.
A train ticket to Kindergarten entitles you and your child admission to the first leg of a long and interesting journey. Your offspring will continue to board and depart this train over and over again as they travel through their many years of education. How well you prepare your child to initiate their journey will have a major impact upon their potential successes. Making sure that your little one has their bags fully packed and is adequately equipped to take this trip can be a bit of a challenge for parents, but oh so exciting!
Along with a new pair of tennis shoes to help them rocket around the school playground, your child's suitcase will need to be lovingly packed with values and guidelines to ensure positive behaviors which will support their future learning. Make sure that you have folded in
skills that assure they will be able to follow simple directions, listen when others are speaking, show respect for others while keeping their hands and feet to themselves and work quietly when necessary.
Preparing for Kindergarten actually starts well before your child departs for the train station at the age of 5 or 6. Understanding that part of the preparation for kindergarten involves promoting developmentally appropriate skills and behaviors; I have captured information, strategies and clues to help parents prepare their child to be ready to embrace the kindergarten experience.

Keys To Success
"Kindergarten children are confident in spirit, infinite in resources,
and eager to learn. Everything is still possible."
Robert Fulghum
Is your child really ready for Kindergarten?
As a parent, one of the most emotionally charged moments in your life will be the day that you introduce your youngster to their very first kindergarten classroom. Even if your little one attended a full time child care center, nursery or pre-school, there is just something different about leaving a child in the hands of their first kindergarten teacher.
Suddenly your baby
may begin to morph right before your eyes, appearing a little bit bigger, older, and perhaps a tiny bit more independent. Or conversely, your self-confident child may suddenly want to hide behind your legs; seeming too insecure or afraid. Either way, you can expect a rush of every parental instinct from fear, possessiveness and anxiety to even joy as you watch your tyke run onto the kindergarten playground. As much as you want them to go, that is just how much you want them
