As Charlotte settles into her new job as a photographer for the local paper and makes a new friend in Molly who works at the town's diner, Charlotte is drawn deeper into the mysteries of the town and towards Derrick himself.

CHAPTER ONE
Charlotte crossed over the bridge that spanned the White Water River. The river brought tourists to the town of Livingston, Oregon during the summer months looking for a little fishing and white water rafting. Once over the bridge, Charlotte saw a small diner named Jenny Lee's Diner and pulled into the parking lot and parked. The place looked like it had seen better days, but she was hungry, and new to town, so she couldn't complain. Once inside, she was pleasantly surprised at how clean and even welcoming it was. She found a place at the counter and sat down.
Can I get you something to drink?
A tall, thin waitress set a menu in front of Charlotte.
Diet Coke, please.
You got it,
the waitress smiled with a lopsided grin. My name is Molly. Just let me know when you're ready.
Molly walked away while Charlotte took a minute to look around the small dinner. She wasn't the only person who had found their way to it that evening. A young couple sat in a corner booth paying more attention to each other than their food, and further down was a man sitting by himself reading a newspaper, and what a man he was, Charlotte thought.
You decided?
Molly took out her order pad and took a good look at the young lady sitting in front of her. She looked nervous.
I'll have the cheeseburger plate, and oh, do you know who that man is?
Charlotte was a bit embarrassed to ask, but she couldn't help herself. Besides being incredibly good looking, in that brooding way she always found attractive, there was something about him that seemed almost familiar.
Molly looked in the direction Charlotte indicated and smiled. Yeah I know him. Gorgeous isn't he?
That's putting it mildly.
Charlotte stole another glance at the man and let her eyes run over his dark hair and chiseled features. His eyes were a dark gray. It was odd, but even at this distance she could make that detail out, and while he was wearing a suit, she had no doubt it hid a swimmer's build.
His name is Derrick Chesterfield. He owns the local newspaper and about a billion other things around town and the state. They say he is one of the wealthiest men in the country, but he still likes to come in here. Go figure.
He owns the newspaper?
Yeah, why?
I just got a job there. I start tomorrow,
Charlotte ran her hand down the strands of hair hanging out of the bun on top of her head, twisting them around her fingers before she let her hand drop. It was a habit of hers when she got nervous.
Lucky girl,
Molly smiled as she went and put in Charlotte's order. You must be new in town then?
She asked as she set a bottle of ketchup in front of her.
I just got here a half hour ago. I don't even have an apartment yet.
There's a vacancy in my building. It's nothing fancy, but its got all the basics. I could put a word in with the landlord for you. He's kind of a grump, but harmless.
That would be great. Thanks,
Charlotte turned and looked at Derrick again. Do you think I should go and introduce myself to him?
The landlord?
No. Derrick,
Charlotte tilted her head in his direction trying not to be too obvious. She had never had the knack for flirting or using her feminine wiles on a man. She wasn't even sure if she had any. Usually, she just came off as awkward and ended up making a fool of herself, or at least that's how she felt about the whole thing.
No need to. Here he comes.
