Prologue
GRACE HAD BEEN AWAY from the fashion industry grind for quite a while. Her heart pounded in her chest at a frightening rate as she waited in the wings. It had been almost ten years since she’d done her stiletto strut, but the fact that she was doing it for the Vogue for Veterans charity helped to take the edge off a bit. She had been down the catwalk a thousand times in a thousand places, but she was not calm, cool, or collected in the least; she was just as nervous as she used to be when her rent money depended on her modeling prowess. For Grace, there was a bit more to it than a charitable contribution, because if all went well she knew it would awaken what had been a very lucrative modeling career gone dormant.
While she willed herself to breathe and stop shaking, she felt a tug and coolness spreading across her back. The chiffon adorning her body, a tiny little figure dieted down to ridiculous thinness, was slowly sliding toward the floor. Her arms reflexively pinned to her side to keep the garment in place. She had warned the designer that the pins wouldn’t hold, and now was the worst possible time for her to be right, because it was her turn to sashay down the runway.
It all happened way too fast for anyone to fix her dress or for her to put something else on. It’s just up and back, Grace told herself, that same pep talk she’d given herself countless times before. You were topless once. If you could do that, you can sure as heck wear this flimsy piece of fabric that was a pretty cool dress a few minutes ago. At least it’s my color, right?
Her nerves jangled as she came face to face with a full audience. It was terrifying and exciting at the same time. She literally sparkled, donning $10,000-worth of on-loan gems, dazzling her ears, finger, neck, wrist, and even her ankles; the ankle bracelets were heavy, but they put extra glide in her step.
With one hand she bunched her dress at her armpit, then used the other to strike her model poses. It all went more quickly than she expected, as if everyone was passing by in a blur. She did spot some familiar faces in the first few rows, the people associated with the charity event. In the audience were her frenemies, Garrett Bunting and Billy Stevens; her new friend Rowena Tungsten, whose house she was staying in while in Savannah; and her boyfriend, Tony Petrides. Nothing seemed to make Tony smile recently, not even the fact that with one slip of the hand, his lover would be naked in front of the polite society of Savannah, wearing nothing but jewels and chains.
She almost made it, but as her recent string of foul luck would have it, Grace’s dangerously spiky heel caught the edge of the chiffon and pulled it from her fingers. The back swath of fabric fluttered from her grip, leaving her backside completely exposed. The audience erupted in a standing ovation, laughing and pointing, but it was not the kind of accolades that Grace wanted.
Heat colored her face as she hurried behind the curtain, to the safety of the backstage area. Mike’L, the designer, glared at her angrily, as if she’d committed some cardinal sin against his poorly constructed creation.
I-I couldn’t find you,
Grace said before he could speak. I had to go on with it the way it was.
Fuck me for taking a cigarette break,
said the designer.
It went fine,
Grace said with a laugh. You’re not deaf, right? Listen to that clapping. They loved it.
I’m thinking the dress is not what they’re applauding, luv,
Mike’L said, rolling his eyes.
Grace sauntered past him to hurriedly change, but she quickly encountered an unexpected impasse. Tony had snuck in the back door and was standing in front of the dressing room like a bouncer, with a nasty frown on his face and his arms folded. He apparently didn’t like her performance any more than Mike’L did. Then again, Grace didn’t appreciate that he was standing in a sea of practically naked models running about, with their parts bouncing to and fro while they changed.
Save it, handsome,
said Mike’L. Cute thang has another dress to model.
See to it that this one stays together,
Tony ordered with a growl.
As if Grace needed more drama in her life at the moment, Garrett Bunting then made an appearance.
What the fuck?
Tony cursed, executing his famous venomous glare.
Petrides,
Garrett acknowledged, unlike you, I belong back here.
So you’re a promoter for bridge club charities these days, huh?
Tony ribbed.
Very few could even hope to win a verbal sparring match with Tony Petrides. Garret Bunting may have been a high-priced litigator/lobbyist, but he was a lightweight when it came to Tony.
Well, since you managed to get me fired from my last gig, I do events now—and worthwhile ones, I might add,
Garrett retorted agitatedly. I actually like it much better, so maybe I owe you thanks.
Yeah, I’ve got your thanks right here,
said Tony threateningly.
With an eye-roll, Garrett sidestepped Tony, took Grace by the shoulders, and kissed her cheek. Grace hated him, but he was the reason she was able to walk the runway again after all that time. She wasn’t sure what she wanted to do from there going forward, but for the time being she was grateful for the modeling opportunity.
I think Madonna is in the audience. I haven’t seen her myself, but that’s the rumor. We may land enough donations from this thing to build a whole new hospital,
said Garrett. I can’t thank you enough.
You’ve thanked her sufficiently,
said Tony jealousy.
Gentlemen,
Mike’L growled in a girlish way, I can’t believe I’m telling your fine selves this, but please leave this area immediately. The star of our evening has to change.
Garrett obediently walked away, but Tony refused and stayed. He walked into the room and closed the door behind him, and Grace held his gaze while Mike’L stripped her naked and fitted her with another dress.
Hey, what’s your name?
Tony snapped in protest.
Mike’L,
he answered, giggling.
"That’s my woman, you know," said Tony.
Don’t worry, honey,
Mike’L said with a shake of his head. She’s only mine up and down the runway.
Tony relaxed and watched. Heat flowed between Grace and him, and their chemistry was undeniable; it never took much, and every cursory glance sent them both into a fit of feverish passion for one another. I’ve got a cousin named Mike,
Tony remarked.
Mike’L’s eyes flared with inspiration. That’s wonderful, darling. Does he like boys, too?
Not that I am aware of,
said Tony, sweeping his eyes over the nearly nude Grace.
Grace grinned sheepishly; she never grew tired of him looking at her that way, with hunger in his eyes.
No smoking in here, kids,
Mike’L remarked, referring to their smoldering gazes.
Ignoring the designer, Tony asked Grace, Did you do that little striptease on purpose?
he asked, sounding as if he was in utter agony.
No! I’m a model, not a burlesque dancer, Tony. It was entirely a, um...fashion accident,
Grace assured him. Of course she left out the confession that if she had known it would go over so well, she would have staged it herself. It wasn’t often that models got standing ovations, but she didn’t want to gloat over it too much when her beautiful, powerful Greek tycoon was looking so helpless and hurt.
Accidents always get the best press, honey,
added Mike’L joyously. Wasn’t it that so-called wardrobe malfunction that made everybody remember Janet Jackson again in 2004? Of course, around that Justin Timberlake, I’d probably slip outta my clothes, too, baby.
Grace laughed, but the smile quickly faded from her face when she realized something horrible: If my name is in the media, Tony’s will be, too. Though the Vogue for Veterans campaign was for charity, it was also a trendy one, and everyone who was anyone wanted to be associated with it. The media knew that, and they were like sharks in bloody water, reporting
