About this ebook

Over nine chapters Gawande makes a detailed and persuasive argument for the use of checklists, not only in surgery, but also in other fields where their use is not as widespread as in aviation and construction which have made checklists mandatory.

As a consequence of his interest in implementing checklists during surgery the World Health Organization put Gawande in charge of a team, which investigated a trial of surgical checklists over eight countries. This trial showed to most people their great worth to the extent that over two thousand hospitals globally, including 10% of US hospitals have introduced them.

Gawande's "Checklist Manifesto" is an effective call to the significance of checklists. His compelling narrative rooted in personal experiences underscores their relevance across diverse disciplines. However, including guidelines on how to structure these lists would have added value. I recommend reading the summary before embarking on the full book. The summary is 5 stars, the book 3 stars

Covered many salient points. It drove the point home with a short investment of time.

INTRODUCTION

This is a book by Atul Gawande, a distinguished American surgeon, who thoroughly and eloquently makes a very strong case for the use of check lists, particularly in medicine, but also such diverse fields as finance, law, and education. He describes their use, indeed their necessity, in aviation and construction, and argues for their use in other fields.

The book begins with a description of a discussion he had with a longstanding colleague about some medical situations that had literally spiraled out of control due to the overlooking of fundamental information. These situations were ones that could have been much less difficult if this information had been described at the outset of treatment.

In the conversation the colleague described what seemed to be a routine situation where a partygoer had been stabbed. The medical team charged with his treatment seemed to be confronted with a perfectly usual case. All of a sudden things got much, much worse for the
