WORK AND SING
An International Song book
This international songbook has grown out of the work-camp movement, in which young men and women of many countries are working together in voluntary teams to rebuild where war and disaster have destroyed. As we use hand and spade to help create a better world, so we can use such a songbook as this as a tool in building the fellowship and understanding which must be the basis of all effort toward world unity. Our spirit and goal is international, and this is a collection primarily of FOLKSONGS, the very nature of which emphasize our common humanity.
The plan has been to include about 90 songs with melody line and words of the song in the original language. As far as possible we have an English version or literal translation, but the richest rewards will come only to those who sing the songs in the original.
This 1948 edition has been completely revised after the first edition was tried out in workcamps in Europe and America last summer. It is a cooperative undertaking, based on suggestions of many individuals and groups. While we have tried to be sensitive to the desires of as wide a group as possible, our selection has been limited by the size of the book, and the variety of styles and nationalities to be represented. The final responsibility for the selection is assumed by the editor.
Of those who have helped make the book, I want to thank especially John Hutchings of IVSP, England, who first edited the suggestions gathered last summer in Europe. His knowledge and judgment have been most helpful. Also, thanks go to Gote Svenson of Sweden, Marie Salomaa of Finland, Marie Bryne of Norway, Piet Kruithof of the Netherlands, Elise Thomsen of Denmark, and Dr. Leonhard Deutsch of the United States. The many workcampers and other individuals here and abroad who have had a hand in the project are large in number and each contribution is valued. Lastly, the workcamp movement is indebted to Lynn and Katherine Rohrbough, whose editorial help and enthusiasm for the project as a whole has been far in excess of the usual role of publisher.

L’ Amitié
2
Quel spectacle sur la terre
Si le monde amait tes lois!
Plus de troubles plus de guerres,
Et la Paix sous tous les toits!
3
Parles aux ames trop altieres
Et les soumets a ta loi
Viens ranger sous ta banniere
Tous les peuples a la foi.
2
What a paradise terrestrial
If the people loved thy ways!
No more fighting, no more trouble,
And peace through all our days.
3
Speak to them that are too haughty
And submit them to thy laws,
Bring together all the peoples
And unite them in thy cause.

Welche Wonne waer' das Leben,
Ehrte man nur
