About this ebook

After a sneak away Friday afternoon with school friends, in and out of the inspiring music of the town bar, Tricia knows she has to get home. With seeding on the farm disallowed that spring, she joins her family gathered around the latest letter from the Repatriation Office requesting their presence tomorrow. Tricia explains as best she can to her pissed off father how grandfather's sword worked better for honor than combat. Stepping down from Dad’s welding truck next day, she accepts the attendant's office pamphlets on a smaller farm and applying Dad's work skills to new energy sources. Comparing the situation to her native friend’s people moving onto reserve last century she knows she can only do so much. She needs something outside herself to help make it work, and maybe that bird can bring on a new belief.

    The Church of Kâhkâkiw

The girls stretch-stepped across the high school yard. With Friday afternoon teacher class cancelled, and little motivation to attend remote sphere, they weren’t going to spend forever standing around the empty bus bench. Tricia dashed laughing out ahead, tossing her brown hair into the hot spring sun. She turned about-face, hands on hips, giving her two friends the what-we-gonna-do girls look. But behind them, her eye caught that dark bird.

Check it out, Tricia said pointing. Following us. Again.

Just one of those crows, Xia said.

Raven, Salina corrected. Elders say ancient eyes.

    Yeah right, Xia said.

Tricia turned to the side, beginning the circle step of their talking churn, and the other two fell in. As they curved around, Salina at least peered across at the jet-black raven perched on a street pole, midnight feathers rustling.

Watching us, Tricia said, squeezing her lips.

He tells you what your ancestors knew, your family before, Salina said. Elders say he’s Creator’s messenger.

Oh yeah? Tricia said. "Translate caw caw."

He’s got something to tell you, Tricia, Salina said. Listen to Napi.

"To tell us maybe, Tricia said, looking hard at the other two. And how do you know he’s a he?"

I don’t, Salina said. Grandmother might say woman’s whisper—from Mother Earth.

She then, Tricia said. She makes the weirdest sounds—not like any whisper. Not like a bird at all.

She’s not a song bird, Salina said.

    It’s like...a chortle.

The tongue of the ancients. Salina poked two fingers at her eyes. Look into her, deep.

How? Tricia said. She only came close once.

Okay native girl, and white woman. Xia, having had enough broke circle ranks first. Let’s take a downtown tour; see what’s shakin. For a Chinese girl, she’d picked up well on the western lingo. She led them off the school grounds, and across the street.

Boring week, Salina said. Except Ms. Ojnee’s project.

We need a cultural topic, Tricia said. She had an idea or two, but wanted to hear her friends first.

Birds’ influence on people, Xia said.

Sure, Tricia said. Could be good.

I look up your raven bird. Thumbing a quick search into her genius phone, Xia popped an image in sphere and pointed. "Wūyā, how you say raven in Mandarin."

Yes...we research, Tricia said, joining in the quest on her device. As they
