    Saving Tirnan

    By Alex Morgan

Captain Andrew scrutinized the deck of the Diamond. Bathed in bright moonlight, the huge ship rocked at anchor, back and forth, gently lulling her passengers and crew to sleep like a mother with an infant clutched to her bosom. He saw that some of the passengers remained on top in twos and threes, but most of them had retired to their cabins. The night watch walked among the small groups, ensuring everyone was comfortable. Some of the crew carried candles in lanterns, giving the illusion of the days of sail and wooden ships. The Diamond herself, a replica galleon, had been built with the likes of the Mary Rose in mind. The rustic setting was popular among those who wanted a sense of romanticism and nostalgia.

The cool breeze rippled across the surface of the still bay, making the water shimmer in the moonlight and rustling the leaves of the palm trees on shore just a few hundred yards away. Andrew smiled, content with everything and everyone being in place, and continued his nightly round of the ship.

He nodded to Hank, who manned the bar, busy cleaning up after the evening’s festivities but staying alert for anyone who may ask for a nightcap. Can I get you something to drink, sir? he asked as Andrew walked past.

Thank you, Hank. Have a glass of red wine sent to my cabin.

A smile lit up the bartender’s handsome face. Shall I deliver it personally, sir? he asked, his wink conveying the unspoken meaning.

Andrew chuckled. I suppose it’s been a slow cruise for you, too?

    Hank nodded sadly.

Andrew patted him on the shoulder. As much as I’d love to take you up on your offer, I need to take a rain check. The whole ordeal with the hurricane has left me drained. Now that we’re in a safe harbor, I’d like to catch up on my sleep so I’ll be ready for anything that might come up. He gave the bartender a suggestive smirk and headed toward the first mate standing at the stern, near the wheel.

The ship had made it into this tropical port after managing to skirt around a hurricane two days ago and Andrew had worked long hours with very little sleep to ensure the ship made it to the safety of this protected harbor. The Diamond never was in any real danger but the heavy sea swells had given the passengers a sense of adventure they would not soon forget.

First Mate Taylor acknowledged his approach. Mr. James just reported from the windward side of the island. The waves are dying down there. We may be able to set sail and resume course tomorrow morning.

Very good. How soon before he returns?

He won’t be back before midnight, Taylor replied. He has to follow the shore since the island is too treacherous to cross by night.

Andrew scoffed. "More likely, he’s managed to score with one of the passengers. We’ve been here before and Mr. James has disappeared for a
