Camp Cooking - Alison Dimarco
Foreword
Camping is supposed to be all about spending time with your family in the great outdoors. What camping is not supposed to be about is worrying about what you are going to be cooking or how big of a mess you are going to need to be cleaning up after meals are done. When you go camping you want to spend time with your family playing outside, whether it is hiking or boating. You want to come back to your campsite feeling like you have enjoyed the day.
Sadly, most of us come back to our campsites dragging our feet. We know that planning, cooking, and cleaning comes next. And frankly, all too often we had so much fun playing that it is the last thing we want to be doing, but we know it has to be done. Luckily, there is something that can be done to make camping fun and exciting once again.
Gone are the days when you need to spend hours planning your camping menu. No more having to load up your entire kitchen just to make it through a week in the outdoors. To make camping enjoyable again all you need is a cast iron pan and a few rolls of heavy duty tin foil, as well as some great recipes to help get you started.

In this chapter, you will learn:
Best types of cookware for camping
Why you need cast iron
Benefits to tin foil cooking
Camping Cookware
Camping is probably one of the most favorite outdoor activity one can do with family and friends. Of course, aside from being able to enjoy the great outdoors, it is also a good time for you to wow your companions with your super cooking skills. But your dishes will not be cooked and presented well if you do not have the right kinds of camping-approved cookware.
Choosing the Best Camping Cookware
There are several types of cookware that you can use to create delicious dishes outdoors, you just have to choose the ones that you can use with utmost confidence and ease. The following are great tips to keep in mind when choosing the ones you need:
Your type of camping. It is important for you to know what kind of camping trip you will be having. Will you be cooking outside or inside a cottage or camp? Now, for both instances, you can always go for cast iron pans, Dutch ovens and of course the trusty tin foil to ensure that whatever type of camping trip you will be going to, you will have effective cookware to use.
Camping location. Will you be camping at a spot where you can easily wash your dishes or at a place where plumbing is a bit of a challenge? Choose cookware that you do not need to wash every single time. Cast iron skillets and pans do not need a lot of washing; just rinse them in water and dry them out and you are good to go. Tin packets on the other hand, are disposable!
Cookware material. Choose the ones that could last you a lifetime. Non-stick camping pans are useful, only for a certain period of time, because they can crack or stain when exposed to extreme heat. Those made with cast iron are known to last for a very long time. And while foils are disposable, these are proven to withstand extreme heat as well. Tinfoils and cast irons, as well as Dutch ovens can ensure even cooking too!
Your cooking style. Choose the types of cookware that are versatile and flexible in terms of your style of cooking. So whether you intend to bake, broil, roast, steam, sauté and boil, your choice of cookware should be able to meet almost all, if not, all of these cooking methods.
Overall, considering all these points, we can conclude that cast iron and foil packets are the best cookware for camping.
Cooking with Cast Iron
The next time you are getting ready to head out on a campout, take a few seconds to pack up your cast iron skillet. If you don’t have one, make sure you go out and buy one just to bring it along. Cast iron skillets are what we call an essential kitchen item because of how versatile they are, bet you never thought to bring one camping though.
When you are out camping you have the option of cooking over a little tiny camp stove or you can cook over the open
