Drew O’Connor stood on the podium and ran his fingers over the heavy gold medal placed around his neck seconds earlier. With hundreds of cameras focused on him, he raised his arms over his head in victory, waved to the cheering crowd and smiled. Then the first notes of the Irish national anthem began and his expression changed as conflicting emotions overwhelmed him. He wasn’t sure what he felt at that moment, but it wasn’t the exhilaration that the spectators shivering in the frigid air or the millions of fans watching on television expected of an Olympic champion.
If anything, his joy and sense of accomplishment came with a big dose of heartache. He rubbed his chest, which ached for the one person he wanted to share this experience with, but his mother was gone. It wasn’t unusual for an Olympian to tear up during the medal ceremony, so there was no shame in the wetness that overflowed his eyes to run down his tanned, wind-burned cheeks. He was the only person who would ever know the real reason for his tears.
