Wilderness Survival - Ross Newman
Introduction
For most of us in the modern age, anytime we are stepping out of the artificial constructs that we call home we are stepping into a foreign terrain. In order to be a master of the woods you need to be more than simply someone with basic outdoor skills who likes nature. While these qualities certainly aren’t a bad thing, you also need to be able to identify and understand how it is that the environment you are in functions.
Before you even set foot in the woods, let’s try a little mental exercise, and try to visualize what the experience will really be like. Let’s imagine that you are on a steep hill overlooking the forest. As you stare down at the trees notice how the color scheme seems to be perfectly interwoven, with the dark greens merging with light greens, light greens merging with earthy browns, notice how everything seems to be a kind of mosaic of nature. From this view you can see just how dominant these trees are to the life down below.
Now imagine yourself stepping into the woods. The floor is covered with fall leaves and as you enter the enclosure of trees you can see the light penetrating down through the branches. As you walk you notice that some of the trees are dead and others are dying at different rates of decomposition. With some rotten trees whose skeletal branches stretch forth like gnarled hands.
But even though these trees are rotten and dying, upon closer inspection you will see that insects are getting their nutrition from the bark and if you look long enough you will also no doubt notice that different woodland creatures such as squirrels have made their home inside the rotted out tree. The forest is woven together in a perfect cycle of life, with every aspect of the environment serving some sort of purpose.
In order for your trek into the woods to be successful you need to keep your senses aware to any changes in this harmonious balance. A woodsman who is aware of his environment knows that all of life is simply a matter of conversion from one form to another; he realizes that every life form on the planet is a consumer and that in this cycle of life we have to do our best not to leave any lasting scar. Being able to survive in the woods without interrupting this balance takes time and exposure to the elements. But as we slowly awaken the senses that smog-clogged cities have long obscured we will once again; know our environment.
