INTRODUCTION

The concept of stress

THE WORLD OF BEING STRESSED OUT

Ups - Downs

Jubilation - Depression

Promotion - Termination

Marriage - Divorce

Birth - Death

Each of the above pairs of opposites relates with a common word – STRESS. Yet, unknowingly and to add to your confusion, even uncertainty itself can cause stress. Stress is the opposite of the word Relaxation. Irrespective of the aspect of life, be it the positive or the negative, they are one way or the other related to causing stress. In addition, stress can arise from something as minor as breaking a shoestring to major situation such as a child ruining his new expensive shoes!

Now, studies have shown that 90% of the top performers are in control of their emotions in times of stress, such that they remain cool, calm and able to do the needful. That ability, is an important lesson in and itself for us all - because we all experience stress in our lives at one time or the other. Let me tell you something surprising: Stress is good for us all:  W e perform optimally when stressed out. But when not managed properly one becomes so stressed out. Thus, too much stress can have serious psychological and physiological repercussions on us.

The sources of stress and its effect on your health

What exactly are the sources, you may ask?

Stress actually comes from the external forces in our lives that push our buttons, provoke extreme emotions and push to the edge. Normally, we commonly think of stress coming from the frustrations, pressures and low points in life. Not only that! Stress can arise from high points and achievements as well. Stress can cause a raise in your level of adrenaline resulting in an increase in heart rate, respiration, and blood pressure. These increases make bodily organs work harder than they should!!! Over a long term, reducing stress becomes critical to fighting some illnesses such as heart disease, high blood pressure, and stroke.

Thus, stress is a defined fact of our lives, but being stressed out is not. It is usually said that we don’t always have control over what happens to us, but that doesn’t have to affect how positive we react to a difficult and challenging situation instead of becoming frazzled or feeling distraught and overwhelmed. Being anxious in an overly manner is not just mentally hazardous- it’s physically hazardous. The more we are stressed out, the more we tend to be vulnerable to colds, flu, and a host of chronic or life-threatening illnesses and the less open to the beauty, pleasure and perfections in life.  Remember that what is good for the goose might not be good for the gander: Whatever creates disabling stress in one person may not have the same affect on another.

Types of stress

Stress can present itself in many ways and in different conditions.

Take for example: Job stress
