About this ebook

Now an animated series on Disney Junior!

The Chicken Squad is back for their fourth (mis)adventure, and this time they’re facing their darkest mystery yet: shadows! A “lip-bitingly funny” (School Library Journal) chapter book from the bestselling author of Click, Clack, Moo and Cyclone.

There’s a big, SHADOWY mystery lurking about on what was supposed to be a nice chicken-family vacation to a farm. Sugar is certain that she is being watched, and when Poppy’s beloved shoe (the shoe that keeps her safe and snug) goes missing, Sugar is sure that this shadow is the culprit. But how does the Chicken Squad tackle a shadow? And do it without ruining the family reunion…which includes meeting eighty-five cousins whose names all begin with the letter B, a lesson on figuring out perimeters (no, Sugar, the perimeter of a car is not one mile), and deciding how many bags of jelly beans one should pack for a road trip?

Four chicken siblings go to visit their many, many cousins on a farm and are shocked when their jellybeans are stolen right from under their beaks! Who could have committed should a heinous crime? This book has a prologue and epilogue told from the family dog's point of view, although I'm not quite sure why. The introduction briefly tells you at least the names of the four main characters, but it doesn't give a whole lot more than that. I'm not sure if reading the previous titles in this series would have helped with getting the characters straight, but I honestly didn't care that much to keep track of them. The story didn't seem to warrant it.There is a short mystery with some suspects, red herrings, etc. There are also a couple of scientific facts and mathematical principles tucked inside the story, so children will be learning something while reading this without feeling like it's too much "work." The writing and vocabulary is relatively basic and the short chapters with black-and-white illustrations will appeal to those kids who are transitioning from early readers but not quite ready to tackle longer chapter books yet.

The Chicken Squad is back and going to a family reunion with JJ and Barbara. As they meet the relatives on the farm, a big mysterious chicken shows up but is not in the greeting line. Poppy's shoe goes missing so how will she sleep? Does the mystery chicken have something to do with the missing shoe? Why has no one told Sugar about all the jelly beans hiding places? The Chicken Squad is as dysfunctional as ever. Now they are under the watchful scrutiny of their extended family. It is a good thing Dirt is there to control Sugar or their detecting would get them in a whole lot of trouble. I love these chickens. JJ's narrative is great. I always feel I'm in a 1940's gumshoe novel. It's great.I look forward to more in this series. I never fail to laugh at their antics

Dark Shadows - Doreen Cronin

Chapter 1

The birdcage bounced around in the back of Barbara’s old green station wagon. Dirt, Sugar, Poppy, and Sweetie bounced along inside of it in the storage area behind the backseat. By the time Barbara pulled off the main highway, it was after 6:00 p.m.

Where are we going again? asked Poppy.

To a farm, answered J. J. from the backseat.

What is the point of this trip again? asked Sugar.

To see things you’ve never seen before, said J. J.

I’ve seen everything there is to see, said Sugar.

You’ve barely been out of the backyard, said J. J.

You have no idea where I’ve been, pal, said Sugar.

Have you ever been to a farm, Mom? asked Dirt.

I grew up on the farm, silly! answered Moosh.

"You grew up on a farm? Sweetie gasped. I had no idea!"

We all have our secrets, kid, said Sugar. Mom clearly has a dark past and doesn’t want to talk about it. Let it go.

I think you’re all going to enjoy it, Moosh continued. There’s wide-open space to run around, and there’s even a pond! We can go fishing and swimming. . . .

I don’t like to get wet, announced Sugar. I’ll just wait in the car.

We can build a bonfire and sing songs, offered Moosh.

I do have a beautiful singing voice, said Sugar. I’ll roll the window down a crack so you can hear me.

We’ll tell stories, added Moosh.

Well, okay, I like a good story, said Sugar. I’ll stay in the car, but I’ll roll down the window halfway so I can hear you.

Can we toast marshmallows? asked Dirt.

That’s a wonderful idea! said Moosh.

Okay, said Sugar. I’ll roll the window down almost all the way, but you’ll need to bring me a really long stick so I can toast my marshmallow from the car.

You can’t stay in the car for a week, said J. J.

You have no idea what I can do, pal, Sugar
