About this ebook

Reporter Tyrrell Garrett survived a terrible confrontation with an unidentified assailant. Now he’s chasing the story of a woman whose life was stolen away due to her association with the fugitive Alex Graves. Who has the answers? This is the fifth novella of the I AM MERCURY series.

I AM MERCURY is a nine-part serial suspense thriller about visions of other worlds, the stories we tell ourselves, and the things we do for love. Each short novella in the series features a different narrator, a different lens through which to view the events of the series. After the riot at Yorkville State Pen, journalists and spies spar off, protestors march forward, and dangerous games play out. What do these interlocking stories mean for each other, and how will they coalesce?

We’ve just been discussing having him moved here. It seems like you’re better equipped than the hospital in Naperville to handle long-term care, if that’s what’s required, the middle-aged woman in the blasé pastels told Dr. Greene. We were hoping for a consultation. You’re so well-regarded in this area.

Long-term care is our priority at St. Ignatius, he responded, having a seat behind his desk. I can recommend some people you can speak to. There’s a Dr. Elmore Heath that’s been here a number of decades that just refuses to retire. He rifled through an ancient rolodex while she clutched her purse and readjusted her nearly inch-thick glasses. She was with a younger girl, likely still in her teens, maybe twenties. Pretty, with straight black hair. Comparatively, the woman speaking was a haggard mess. What did you say your name was, Miss?

Tierney. Donna Tierney. It’s my husband, he’s been in a coma for a number of days now and the doctors have been telling us... she trailed off into a brief spat of sobs and tears. They’ve been saying it’s time to look into long-term care. Doctors can’t diagnose him, or at least in any language I can understand. Honey, she said, turning to the younger girl with the straight hair, do you have the sheet they gave us?

The pretty girl with the thick pink lips and the dead-eyed attitude reached into her bookbag and extracted a manila folder. She opened it briefly, then handed Dr. Greene a paper from inside. The diagnosis sheet explained the coma plainer than Donna Tierney could: damage to the ARAS. Most likely cause is
