This book was completely adorable.. for the right audience. It's pretty clearly for those parents already buying Ramones and Sex Pistols onesies for their babies. It's what you read to your kids before they actually totally understand the content of what you're reading, but still want to do your duty of reading to your pre-toddlers (yeah, it's a duty, read to your kids!!) I don't know how much interest it would be to kids who are used to story picture books because there's not much of a story in there, but as a punk fan I appreciated the cutesy illustrations and poetic blurbs about some of my favorite bands. The writing isn't really the strong point of the book, but the art is cool enough to prop it up. This would, as others have suggested, be a great new parent gift for the punk family in your life.

What Is Punk? is a children's picture book written in verse by Eric Morse and illustrated with clay figures by Anny Yi. It gives a quick history fo punk music and its offshoot subgenres, as well as what punk culture is and who were the most important performers of the scene. I admit, as someone who knows very little about music and music history, I was hoping to learn about punk. However, with Morse obviously a punk aficionado, there is only so much that can be covered in a picture book format, not to mention the limitations from writing in rhyming verse. Despite my expectations, this is a charming book, and Morse has done great with expressing his love of punk. Anny Yi's clay art is fantastic, as well. Illustrating with photographed three-dimensional figures, dolls, and dioramas in picture books is vastly underutilized today, so it was refreshing to see Yi's quirky and expressive use of the art form.In all, What Is Punk? may not be the first place to learn about punk, bt it is a perfectly charming celebration of the music and lifestyle.

I received this book as part of the LibraryThing Early Reviewer Program. This book, illustrated with images made of clay and paper, tries to explain punk music to kids. The illustrations are amazing, and if I knew the singers/groups better I have a feeling the illustrations actually look like them. And the fact that the text is in rhyme is amusing. But it doesn't really explain what punk music is. Instead, it gives a list of the artists/bands and a bit of the chronology. If the book explained WHAT punk is, I would have given it 5 stars.

I thought What Is Punk? was an adorable book; but am undecided if it is meant for adults or children. The clay art and rhyming couplets featuring (great!) punk rock bands and idols are whimsical and delightful as an adult punk rock fan. Though the text is clearly intended for children, I'm not sure what age group would really appreciate the themes...or if the correlating illustrations would be appropriate for the children old enough to appreciate punk! I would definitely use this as a gift for new parents who love punk, and will be keeping my copy (though I don't have kids) simply because it makes me happy!

If you are a fan of punk music and have young kids this is the book for you. The book covers punk rockers and is told in prose with imaginative Claymation type illustrations. I can see this being a nice baby shower gift for a punk rocker turned parent. I loved seeing some of the punk rockers such as the Descendents, Henry Rollins, Keith Morris, etc. turned into clay people.

The real pleasure in this book is the artwork and the way various punk musicians have been imagined in clay. The verse itself is cute, though a few sections scan pretty awkwardly and surely could have been substituted for something that fit the rhythm better. I had a good time flipping through it, as did my old punk husband, and I could imagine us giving this to punk-leaning friends who have young ones, but mostly because it indicates "hey I know that you are punk and also having a baby."

This book was everything I had hoped it would be and more! What a fun idea; an introduction to punk set with rhyme and pictures made of clay. It's something I look forward to sharing with my kids.

I read this book to my kids, who are 4 and 5. They loved the illustrations. As an adult I believe that it is important to show our children diversity in all things. This book does that. It describes what punk is and the various bands that make up the genre. This is a great book that exposes our children to new things.

This gem, despite it being a children's book, was just something I had to get my hands on. Illustrations made from clay like claymation! Punk music! Zines! While unwrapping this one from the post office, I was fittingly enough wondering how Budgie was doing before I even realized it was this book-- written for children about punk music. As it is a book for children, it doesn't exactly explain punk in depth. Mainly the pages feature rhymes and photos of clay punk icons but I can appreciate a Joe Strummer made of clay. I know I sure couldn't create clay figures that actually look like the people they represent. The camo pants look especially difficult to make. This takes heart. And this book gets my heart.

This is an LT Early Reviewer win, but it's a completely finished book. The claymation illustrations are wonderful, depicting legendary punk bands and clubs. Think "Davey and Goliath" with leather jackets and guitars. The poem that guides the action isn't so great. It explains the various bands and gives some history of the movement, but the author is a clunky poet. But there's a two page picture of the Ramones! Fun and quirky.

A cute little book but not one that is likely to be in heavy rotation. The claymation-style artwork is fun and it’s really nice that the text rhymes. My daughter lost interest pretty quickly but not sure whether that was due to content or because the book is a little above her level right now (it has about two rhyming couplets per page; her attention span is closer to one). But honestly, this is a book you would buy for the parents more than the kids. And by that measure, this book succeeds. It’s more than taking a photo and saying “I is for Iggy Pop.” I’d definitely recommend it as a gift for a punk music loving parent or parent-to-be.
