Chapter One
Detective Marion Jefferies snapped up the police issue 45 off the kitchen counter and approached the door of her apartment holding it behind her back.
She stepped to one side of the door. Who is it?
George Sterling Portland PD.
She yanked the door open. Why do you insist on using that response? Never mind that, what the hell are you doing here?
She turned her back on her partner and walked to the kitchen setting her gun on the chopping board counter as she crossed to the refrigerator. Want a beer?
No thanks your stouts are a little strong for me. Walters sent me, said to sit tight that he'd be here in twenty.
Why would the captain send you to my place?
She tipped up the bottle and took a long drink. Why not call me, meet at your place?
He looked around at the room, at what he frequently referred to as early depression furnishings. Honesty I think he relates a little more to your tastes than that of my digs at the Paladin towers. Perhaps more importantly why would he want to meet with us outside the station?
Good point., maybe a social call?
They both turned at the sound of rapid pounding at her door. Instinctively George stepped back, changing his angle to the apartment entrance, Marion stepped over and snapped up her gun. They had the door in a cross fire.
Who's there?
Captain Walters.
Both detectives knew that when he used his title he was all business.
C'mon on in.
He looked from Marion to George. You guys expecting trouble?
George replaced the pistol in his under arm holster.
I need a beer.
Marion replaced her gun and scanned the fridge for the darkest brew. After ten years on the force she knew what the Captain liked.
He looked around. Let me get you both on the couch.
Without waiting he pulled out the coffee table and sat down hard.
Marion threw herself in one corner of the couch and propped her feet on the edge of the coffee table next to where the captain sat, George sat squarely on one of the cushions.
You remember Tamera, my God daughter-
Both detectives nodded wondering where their boss was going with the question. He ran a hand through his hair.
On a tip, Seattle PD intercepted a van load of babies sitting on the dock.
He looked from one detective to the other. SPD called me because most of the babies came out of Portland.
She reached a leg over and gave George's thigh a shove. You don't have to ask twice but why this meeting, why not bring it up at tomorrow’s briefing?
George brushed off his slacks and glared at her. Yeah we're on it.
The Captain took a long swig. I knew I could count on you two. Truth? I already knew about the kidnappings. My God daughters baby was snatched two days ago and I've been working the case myself. The call from SPD brought me to my senses. I can't do this alone. The worst part is that my delaying a full investigation may have jeopardized any number of babies and my own God daughters child.
George looked at his watch. It’s still early we can head down to the station right now.
The captain finished his beer. "In part that’s why I’m here. The SPD tip indicated a location for the next exchange, that it would take place right here in Portland, money for babies. It's going down in a warehouse on the South side right now. I’m here talking to you like this because I can’t bring the precinct in. If it came out that I knew about the Black Market baby sales and didn’t bring the force in on it- well you can imagine the public outcry.
Marion dropped her leg to the floor and leaned forward. What exactly are you asking?
The three of us can handle this. We can make the bust.
He stood up. I’m asking for your help and your silence. Leave the explanations to me and roll with whatever I come up with.
George rocked forward. What are we looking at?
The Captain began to pace. "The warehouse is part of a storage complex. One way in, no back door the structure is surrounded by asphalt, a couple of trees and a hedge for decoration. Dumpsters flank the entrance, good cover. George, we’ll go in together, Marion you watch the entrance.
She stood and folded her arms. Kidnapping babies.
She shook her head. The scum of the earth. I say we take no prisoners.
George leapt to his feet a move that surprised.
I say the three of us storm the place.
The captain pressed the air down with his hands. No. We can’t go in under a hail of bullets the babies could be inside.
Marion gave her partner a half smile.George I’m proud of you.
He looked back at Marion It’s just this is crime at the lowest level. What’s the lighting like?
A few burned out lamp posts, we’ll have to rely on the full moon.
Marion walked over to the calendar. Yup, full tonight.
The captain watched her tap the picture. Does it matter?
Only that it’s a bad omen for those scum.
Orlando dozed at his post behind a dumpster. His head snapped up at the sound of whispering.
He wanted to warn Jose inside but he knew that might nix the deal. He remembered hunting with
