About the Author
Introduction
Welcome to Advanced Studies for Bass Guitar, the fourth book in the Bass Techniques Series. This book contains ten study pieces that will provide you with an opportunity to refine and build on the technical side of your playing. All of the techniques required by the contemporary electric bass player are covered here, from fingerstyle and plectrum playing, to slap bass and two handed tapping. There are also pieces that will allow you to focus on your chordal and harmonic playing.
The pieces in this book are study pieces, or ‘études’, meaning that they have been written to allow you to focus specifically on either a technique, or a musical idea. As the title of the book suggests, these are challenging pieces, meaning that it’s important for you to have a solid grasp of the technique in question before working on them. Each one should be studied carefully, practiced slowly and perfected over time. Once you have mastered a piece, you will have attained a high level of skill with that particular technique.
I wrote this book for a number of reasons, chief amongst these the fact that as a teacher I am often asked by my students to recommend study pieces that will help them focus on specific techniques. With that in mind, I realised that over my many years of playing the bass, I had accumulated a number of short pieces of my own that I use for keeping my ‘chops’ in shape. Some of these I had been keeping on the back burner with the idea that I might turn them into full-length songs at some point, but realising that one of my main musical strengths is as an educator rather than as a composer, I decided instead to treat them as study pieces. I also took the opportunity to use the writing of this book as a way to force myself to finish developing some ideas that I had been intermittently working on for several years! The result is this book: a collection of ten studies that will provide you with plenty of musical challenges as you work to improve your technical abilities.
For each piece you will find a set of detailed performance notes. These will help you with difficult fingerings and provide advice when tackling some of the technical aspects of the study. If you require further help with any of the techniques themselves, the other books in the Bass Techniques series -
Ultimate Slap Bass, Ultimate Tapping for Bass Guitar and Plectrum Technique for Bass Guitar are the perfect place to start. All three are also available as physical books and eBooks from Bassline Publishing. For each piece I have also included a recommended
listening list which references compositions by well-known bass players that will serve as excellent additional study material. Listening to and analysing these great songs will reinforce your studies significantly. If you have the time and patience to transcribe and learn them as well, this will be of even greater benefit to you!
Audio Files
All of the study pieces in this book come with an accompanying audio file to listen to and where appropriate a full-band backing track. You’ll find the audio files in a zip folder listed with the bonus content for this book. Right click and select ‘Save as’ to download.
