About this ebook
THE DUKE’S BROTHER, a regency romance novella by USA Today bestselling author Heather B. Moore
"Unique, entertaining, and just right for any Regency lover." --Melissa DeMoux, DESERET NEWS
Mr. Gregory Clark is having an awful day, and it only gets worse when he’s ran over by … a woman. Mabel Russell reluctantly visits her sister in London for the Season, even though she’d rather stay in the country cataloging insects and aphids. When she runs into Mr. Clark, quite literally, she’s afraid to show any interest, especially since he’s a member of the dreaded Ton. But getting to know Mr. Clark becomes an unexpected delight.

Chapter One
Burnside County, England—1821
I despise my sister,
Mabel Russell muttered. She dipped her quill into the inkpot, trying to come up with a nice way to put off her sister’s umpteenth invitation to join her in London and take part in the Season. Perhaps despise is too strong a word.
Dear Ethel,
It is with deep regret that I must turn down your kind invitation. For I have come down with...
She stopped and rubbed her temple with one hand. What could she say that she hadn’t already used as an excuse? If she claimed illness, Ethel would make the journey home to their country estate... well, their former estate. Their father had died six months before, after which the estate promptly went to their father’s first cousin, Mr. Lloyd Griffin.
For the past six months, Mabel had not only grieved over the loss of her kindly, if a bit preoccupied, father, Lord Russell, but she’d also endured her childhood home’s being invaded by another family. Nothing was the same anymore.
Mabel sorely missed her father. He’d been a gentleman as well as a respected scientist. During his life, extensive collections of insects and birds had been displayed about the house, a fact that had startled many of their guests over the years. Even Mabel’s sister, Ethel, had been quite adverse toward them. But Mabel had never known anything different and accepted insect displays about the house as a part of her normal upbringing. Unlike Ethel, Mabel embraced her father’s scientific obsessions and started her own insect collections.
Her mother, having died when Mabel was too young to remember her, had no influence on Mabel’s upbringing. To avoid her older sister’s fussiness and annoying attention to details such as the latest fashions, which ribbons should be used, and how many times one could wear the same pair of shoes, Mabel had naturally followed her father about.
At his side, she’d learned more about insects and birds than any society woman should ever know. In addition to her father’s studies, she’d also begun to find an interest in reptiles and invertebrates. Mabel supposed that as the years continued to go by without her attending a Season or securing a husband, she’d be placed in the eccentric category. For now, she didn’t want to be categorized as anything. Her greatest desire was to be left alone, to roam the lands she’d grown up on, to create her own collection of species, and study interesting books.
There was just the small matter of the house being occupied by her father’s cousin and his family, which, unfortunately, consisted of a nasal-toned wife and three boys under twelve. Loud, obnoxious boys full of questions. Boys who followed her all over the house if she didn’t take care to sneak down the back stairs.
Mabel crumpled the letter and pulled out another piece of paper.
Dear Ethel,
I regret to inform you that I will not be able to accept your kind invitation. I have found myself quite busy with my new aphid collection, so I plead for your understanding...
A loud knock on her door startled Mabel into dripping a blot of ink onto the paper.
Mabel! Mabel!
a young boy’s voice cried out. Tom’s tipped over your insects!
To another person, the words would have made no sense, but for Mabel, the words shot dread straight into her heart. She jumped up from her chair and rushed to her door. Flinging it open, she came face to face with William, a boy of nine or ten.
His eyes widened at her hasty appearance, but he quickly said, This way! He’s in your shed.
Mabel’s blood pumped hot as she started to run. No one was allowed in her shed, and she kept it locked tight for that reason. Last week, Tom had released one of her snails and Mabel had never seen it
