About the Author
PART I: INTRODUCTION
Just think about your personal experience while doing your important tasks!
Do you struggle to put your all energy and focus on the work at hand?
Do you get distracted with every other ringtone or notification on your smart phone and switch from your work?
Do you get tempted to engage in gossiping or office conversation more than often at the cost of hampering your work?
Do you think that your environment is not conducive for you to put focussed efforts into your work?
Chances are that either you would have felt it about yourself or at least observed it in your surroundings.
I have personally experienced it many times and also seen people around in the corporate world suffering from a deficit of focus most of the times. Not only in the corporate world. In every area of your life, if you see around, it has generally become too difficult to stay attentive for a longer time.
The modern technology and the communication/social media tools have greatly added to the woes to the already distracted society.
Try to compare today’s world with just one generation before only and you would note the difference.
The difference is clearly in terms of the number of distraction added to our lives. The old generation just had a television at their house. Some of you may ask your grandparents and they will tell you that it used to be a luxury to have television at home. Also, there were only fixed line telephones at houses or at the office. This way, people were approachable only when they were stationed at particular places and otherwise not.
The point I am trying to make here is that the number of distractions in the past were very limited. Therefore, there was a scope that if you put some efforts with discipline, you would have been able to focus on the work at hand. At least, the technology was not so deeply pervasive in people’s lives in those days.
A Look at Today’s Modern Day Life
You would agree that the modern day technology has given all of us numerous advantages. The technology has tied the world so closely that the world seems to be a global shopping complex itself. The advent of the internet has further made this world ultra-connected. The global trade and communication means are so much seamless that you don’t realize the distance of thousands of miles. The exchange of ideas is super quick and instantaneous as compared to one or two generations ago.
But, this same technology has produced too many side effects as well. These side-effects are clearly the focus drainer and very frequently distract us from our important works. Below is a list of the few side effects that have come with the new technology.
Every morning you are inundated with an endless number of emails to be responded on yesterday basis.
You mobile phone, which is not merely a talking instrument, has become a mini-computer in your pocket on a daily basis, throwing all kinds of news alerts and updates every few seconds.
Your social media networks are frequently bombarding you with news feeds and funny pics and videos of your friends every now and then.
The automatic notifications on the apps installed on your phone, keep on blinking or beeping to you 100 times a day.
What does all this lead to?
Obviously, sitting calmly and focussing on your important deliverables has become much more straining these days on two counts.
First of all, one has to spend enough amount of willpower and energy to stay focused on the complex project.
Secondly, the energy spent in staying away from all such distractions also drains much of your energy.
Even if you have cast-iron willpower, the mere fact that the Internet is lying in wait on your computer takes a toll on your work performance. The very act of resisting temptations eats up concentration and leaves you mentally depleted. There was a study conducted in 2011 at the University of Copenhagen to assess the
