    So, in 2016 I wrote some essays. I couldn’t elongate any one into a substantial piece of work and I wasn’t inspired to write any more to create a larger collection. But I think they’re interesting pieces to share for just one coin in your pocket. Think of it as buying me a coffee (though I hardly drink it) and for that favour I’ve handed you some sheets.

    Englishness

    I was a teenager buying some sweets after school from my local newsagent when a white man came in with a smile and randomly asked what do you see yourself as? Indian, Pakistani, English? The man’s eyes were directed at the son of the Hindu newsagent. He replied Indian, Asian. The man that looked at me, seemingly not satisfied with the boy’s response. I thought about it for a second and said British Asian. He said no, no. You’re English! If you’re born or live here that’s what you are! Myself and the newsagent’s son just smiled and the man soon headed off after paying for his paper.

    I have no idea why that man came in and randomly asked that question (it’s a true event, though I can’t remember it verbatim) but it made me think. Though I’m the son of immigrants from Pakistan, I was born and raised in London and wouldn’t even visit Pakistan until over 15 years later, yet
