What makes Instagram such a powerful marketing tool?

First of all, its popularity alone makes the app a stand-out platform for marketing and influencing. As of January 2017, Instagram has 600 million active users worldwide.¹ In the U.S., Instagram is the 2nd most popular social media platform in terms of its penetration – 32% of U.S. internet users – and is topped only by Facebook. It even beats out Twitter, LinkedIn, and Pinterest. Furthermore, the app is popular among teens – 79% of U.S. teens name Instagram as their favorite overall app.²

As a result of its soaring popularity, Instagram has become a prominent choice for advertising. The number of advertisers on Instagram doubled in just six months in the end of 2016 and beginning of 2017, bringing the total to more than 1 million advertisers.³

But perhaps even more important to digital advertisers and influencers than Instagram’s popularity is its engagement capabilities. Engagement refers to the ability to connect with your followers and is measured by numerous factors, including shareability, post visibility, and users’ tendency to comment. For instance, Starbucks connects with its customers by regularly posting images of their followers as well as shots of their baristas to create a sense of community and a welcoming environment. Additionally, the company also posts updates on new drinks, seasonal menu items, special discounts and more to keep fans of the brand in the loop and motivate them to stop into their local Starbucks.

American Express frequently features images from tourists all over the world on their Instagram profile as a clever way to not only create a visually beautiful feed that attracts followers, but also promote how their cards are travel-friendly.⁵ Many furniture stores like West Elm and Ikea showcase photographs of homes that display their furniture, which allows followers to see how they might be able to incorporate or style those pieces into their own homes.
