COULD it not be, the young man asks his wise uncle,
could it not be simply that we are alone and aimless, doomed to wander in an indifferent universe, with no hope of salvation, nor any prospect except misery, death, and the empty reality of eternal nothing?"
And you wonder,
the uncle answers, you wonder why you're not invited to more parties.
You may not recognize the uncle in this story, but I'm sure many of you will recognize the young man. He is, of course, the ultimate existential pessimist, Woody Allen. Woody Allen is a marvelous storyteller, but he is also a prime example of how the stories we tell ourselves shape us. And since I am a storyteller and not a scientist or a naturalist, I am very interested in the stories people tell themselves.
