Beginner Italian in 32 Topics. Speak with Confidence About Everyday Matters. - David Michaels

    Introduction

    Why learn Italian through topics?

So you want to speak Italian, right? To be able to converse with other Italian speakers you will need to speak about various topics. Here we introduce the essential vocabulary you will need to speak about 32 everyday topics such as ‘money’, ‘politics’ and ‘food’. This will equip you with both the vocabulary and language skills for speaking in Italian about the things that you would normally speak about in your own language.

    How does it work?

We start with an article about each topic. But to keep things interesting we have added an angle. So for example, if the topic is ‘Money,’ then the article is about ‘The History of Money’. This way you will learn essential vocabulary while remaining interested in what you are reading. In order to fully understand how to use the vocabulary there are also example sentences for each of the target words. We have also included full translations of everything to ensure you gain the most from the articles.

    Who is this book for?

If you have a good knowledge of basic grammar and vocabulary then this book will help you gain confidence in what you already know, and help you to take your Italian to the next level. Essentially, if you are a high level beginner or pre-intermediate learner you will definitely benefit and improve both your vocabulary and overall Italian level.

    Driving

    Driving in Europe.

    Guidare

    Guidare in Europa:

    Part 1.

Ognuno pensa di guidare bene. Ma alcuni non sono molto bravi a guidare. Gli italiani hanno la fama di superare il limite di velocità e di passare col semaforo rosso. Spesso hanno l’abitudine di non rispettare la distanza di sicurezza e di fare sorpassi azzardati. Questo è pericoloso e spesso accadono incidenti. Il vantaggio di guidare in Italia è che si può parcheggiare dappertutto.

    English:

Everybody thinks that they are a good driver. But of course some people are not good. Italians are famous for speeding and ignoring traffic lights. They also love to tailgate and overtake each other. This is dangerous and they often have crashes. I saw lots of accidents there. The good thing about driving in Italy is that you can park anywhere.

    Vocabulary:

Superare il limite di velocità: Speeding.

Example: Ha fatto un incidente perché stava superando il limite di velocità.

Example: He was speeding and then he had an accident.

Passare col semaforo rosso: Go through the red traffic light.

Example: Quando il semaforo è rosso bisogna fermarsi.

Example: You must stop at the traffic lights if they are red.

Rispettare la distanza di sicurezza: Observe the following distance.

Example: Non rispettare la distanza di sicurezza è molto pericoloso perché si rischia di tamponare la macchina davanti.

Example: It is very dangerous to tailgate someone because if they stop suddenly you could hit them.

Sorpassare (un’altra macchina): To overtake (another car).

Example: Bisogna sorpassare solo quando nell’altra direzione non arrivano macchine.

Example: You should be careful when you overtake in case a car is coming from the opposite direction.

    Un incidente: An accident.

Example: Di notte ci sono più incidenti.

Example: There are more accidents at night.

    Parcheggiare: To park (a car).

Example: Ho parcheggiato la mia macchina vicino a casa.

Example: I parked my car next to my house.

    Part 2.

In Germania ci sono autovelox dovuenque, infatti i tedeschi guidano abbastanza lentamente sulle strade normali. Tuttavia, non esiste un limite di velocità in autostrada, quindi bisogna fare attenzione. Gli Slovacchi sono forse i migliori guidatori in Europa. Usano sempre le frecce direzionali e sono prudenti nelle rotonde. L’importante è fare sempre attenzione quando si guida.

    English:

Germans are ok because there are speed cameras everywhere so they drive quite slowly on normal roads. However, there is no speed limit on the motorway so you need to be careful. Probably the best drivers on the road are Slovaks. They always indicate when turning and are careful on roundabouts. But wherever you are, please be careful.

    Vocabulary:

    Un Autovelox: A speed camera.

Example: Gli autovelox rilevano la velocità di una macchina.

Example: You need to drive carefully around speed cameras.

    Una strada: A road.

Example: Questa strada porta in città.

Example: This road goes to the city.

Il limite di velocità: The speed limit.

Example: Il limite di velocità su questa strada è di 50 chilometri all’ora.

Example: The speed limit on this road is 50km an hour.

    Un’autostrada: A motorway.

Example: In autostrada si può andare più veloce.

    Example: You can drive fast
