Chapter One
The sun began to set when Benjamin Holly finally decided enough was enough. The hot sands of Nevada had been beating him since the morning, and his aching feet could not take another step. The vast desert in front taunted him on how much farther he had to go.
‘Why does safety always have to be in the middle of nowhere?’ Ben muttered to himself as he spied a clump of rocks a few hundred yards away. Hefting his slipping backpack on to his shoulder, the man with dusty brown hair trudged a little further before collapsing in the centre of the rocks.
The sun had begun to kiss the horizon, and Benjamin let out a sigh. There were a few things he had to do before making camp. Pulling open the battered gray backpack that had been his friend for so many years, Ben put his worn journal to the side and then found the little box of waterproof matches. Scrounging around for a pile of dry twigs and bramble, the young man had a roaring fire by the time the sun disappeared.
‘There. Now I won’t freeze.’
The cold wind hit him in the face, the sand burning as he made his way to a small rock. The rock had a worn indentation that reminded him of a bowl. Laying his finger in the pot, he muttered a word under his breath and watched as it began to fill up with water. Taking a few mouthfuls, he turned around and found that by the campfire, green shoots had appeared. Cutting them down, he began to munch on them thankful that his powers still worked in the desert.
Ben pulled out the blanket that took up most of the inside of his bag and laid it out gently trying not to rip it. Laying down on it, Ben put the now empty bag under his head and rested staring up at the stars.
The light from the camp fire danced brilliantly against the orange/red sandstone. The deep carvings of Native American symbols seemed to move on their own from the shadows that were cast. The rocks surrounded him like a small, little enclosure and they felt safe. As his eyes began to drift shut, he sensed what he was waiting for.
Sitting back up, he found a man standing on the edge of the camp fire. Most of his frame was hidden by the shadows, but two glowing, coyote-like eyes stared back at him. Ben slowly removed the necklace with a little figure carved out of wood on it from around his neck and laid it down on the ground in front of him.
