He Loves Me He Loves Me Not
Full Page ImageChapter One
Angela straightened the large pile of paperwork on her desk and sighed. It was going to be another long day. No matter how hard she worked, she always found more to do. She knew that this was due in large part to her workaholic attitude, but she couldn’t stand to let anything go unfinished.
You ever going to remember that you aren’t the only one who works for this company?
Greg asked as he walked in the door with a disposable cup of coffee in each hand and a folded newspaper under his arm. I’m pretty sure we have a bookkeeper who can handle at least some of those papers for you. Give her the bills and let her do her job.
Accepting the cup of coffee from PJ’s that he handed to her, Angela nodded. I guess I could. I just don’t want anyone to think I’m pawning my job off on them.
Trust me, nobody is going to think that. You work harder than anyone else around here, and it shows. It wouldn’t hurt you to lighten your load a little bit. You might have more free time on your hands, and I’m sure I can think of lots of good ways for you to spend it.
He shot her a meaningful look with his pale blue eyes.
Angela blushed and looked away, avoiding his handsome smile even though he was right. Yeah, yeah. I guess you’re right. I’ll sort through the stack and take some of it to her. What are you up to this morning?
Greg was the warehouse foreman for Crawford Lumber, and he was dedicated to his job as well. I’m having the guys do a little bit of autumn cleaning. The main part of the floor gets swept regularly, but I think it’s time to pull out all the racks and clean everything behind them. Lumber isn’t always the cleanest business, but there’s no reason we should have cobwebs full of wood dust between the racks and the walls of the warehouse.
That’ll keep you busy for the week.
Angela admired his initiative. Nobody would have criticized him if he didn’t do a little bit of deep cleaning, but she was glad that this was more than just a paycheck for him. The business had been in her family for decades, and it meant a lot to her.
I’m also thinking about having an alarm system installed at my house. Did you see this?
He flopped the newspaper down on the desk in front of her.
The front page of the Millerston Herald bore a large headline which read Fifth Burglary in Two Weeks
. Underneath was a picture of an elderly homeowner standing in the middle of her ransacked living room. This is crazy. Millerston used to be the kind of town where nobody locked their doors or cars at night. This shouldn’t be happening.
So far, the burglar is doing this when there’s nobody home. It’s a good thing in a way, but it’s still unsettling. What if he makes a mistake? Or he gets desperate?
Greg rubbed his stubbly chin. I worry about you living alone out there at your grandmother’s house.
Angela waved off the concern. I don’t have the kind of house that people target, at least not until I manage to put on new siding and do a little bit of landscaping.
She had been slowly remodeling the house ever since she had moved in at the beginning of the year, but she had a long way to go before she was done. It still looks like a dump.
Greg looked like he wanted to argue, but he also knew it was almost impossible to make Angela budge once she’d made up her mind about something. I admit it’s not the ritziest place, but take a look at the victims so far. This guy isn’t going for the new, big houses in the developments or the old mansions that have been remodeled to period. He’s breaking into small places and taking common items. And that’s not even the scariest part.
What is?
Angela couldn’t imagine that she had much worth stealing. She kept all of her money in the bank, and what few pieces of fine jewelry she owned were secured in a safe under her bed. Her television had been purchased in a second-hand shop. The only thing that might be worth stealing was her laptop, but she never left it out where anyone could see it.
The fact that he’s watching,
Greg explained. "A burglar doesn’t just happen to break in when someone isn’t home. He’s casing the houses and learning the owners’ schedules. As much as I loathe the idea of a stranger going through my things, I really don’t like the idea of someone watching me."
The mail arrived at that moment, and Angela immediately snagged her letter opener and began going through it. There were a few bills, which she set aside for the bookkeeper, as well as some sales flyers and some junk mail. At the bottom was a letter from California.
Her heart thudded as she slit open the top. She’d left her life in California and come back to Oregon after her divorce. Angela had been eager to forget all about her first marriage and everything associated with it. She had never really fit in down there anyway. Her ex-husband had at one point tried to get her back into his life, but Greg had made him see the flaw in that idea. Jake hadn’t bothered her since. This letter was something far different than an annoying ex.
Dear Angela,
I’m writing to inform you that one of our marketing associates has gone on maternity leave and decided not to come back. When you worked here, you were a wonderful part of the team even though your job description was so nominal. I’d like to invite you to come back, but this time as an associate. Your ideas, skills, and experience are a perfect fit for
