Way to Go: A Research-Based Strategy for Establishing a Positive Relationship Between Parents and Teachers
()
About this ebook
Is there anything out there that can help us to communicate more effectively with parents? Nothing concerns me more as a school administrator or causes me more angst as the fear of unhappy parents. Very early in my career as an early childhood administrator, I vivdly remember a mommy physically backing me up to the wall with her jabbing words and bullying attitude. It seemed there had to be more going on than her discontent with a teacher who wasn't "loving enough" to her child. My deeper concern was how to prevent a parent from getting this angry in the first place.
After finding a startegy to forge positive communciation between parents and teachers, I employed the strategy, in serviced teachers, and replicated the research for two years. Parents who are satisfied with the school's attempt at good communication were also pleased with the way the school was going. There is a strong correlation between parent satisfaction and school communication practices.
The book details the "tell the teacher more" strategy, the training of school personnel, the research, and the comments from the teachers themselves how one strategy at the beginning of the school year can have major impact on the positive communication that happens all year long! If you want to make a major impact in the communcation with your school parents, grab the book and read about the "Way to Go!"

Other how-to books provide advice, but this one shares the "way to go" along with authentic comments from the teachers themselves as to how much the process helped them throughout the rest of the year to continue great communication with their parents! "Way to Go" provides the philsophy and educational research behind the strategy for the positive communication model, the necessay ingredients for the successful implementation of "Tell the Teacher More Day" as well as the follow through. I live in Magnolia, Texas, with my husband, Dean. We have two married daughters and four grandchildren.

Have you ever set out on a journey without a destination in mind? Not merely a Sunday drive or a hike in the woods, but rather a journey or a long vacation? I would guess that the answer for most of us would be no. Vacations and travel take careful planning. Destinations are researched. Reservations are made. Much preparation takes place. We must choose which WAY TO GO! As teachers we prepare for the new school year, our own professional journey, with vigor. We hang bulletin boards and plan curriculum, but how much time do we put into researching our destination? How much do we specifically prepare for the individual students we will be teaching for the next year?
When Mary Beth shared that she wanted to write a book about our experiences with the Tell the Teacher More Days,
I knew what she had to name it. Anyone who knows her knows that her enthusiasm is infectious! Her chant WAY TO GO!
can be heard throughout the hallways as she cheers on the teachers, students, and even the parents of our school. She sets the positive tone of our school and guides us to our own destination.
As a teacher on her staff I have participated in the Tell the Teacher More Days
and believe it is the WAY TO GO! This past fall, not a month after school began, I found myself sitting in the hospital as my husband awaited emergency surgery to remove his gallbladder. I sent off a quick email to the kindergarten parents letting them know I would likely be out for a few days and why. I could never have imagined all the kind responses I received form the parents.
One parent worked at the hospital and stopped by to see us right before surgery. Another parent served on the Board of the hospital and asked the hospital chaplain to stop in for a prayer. All in just a
