William Allen Heinselman

William is blessed to have grown up in California's Mother Lode area. By the age of eight, fishing was one of his favorite things to do. He had two ponds within hiking distance from his house,  giving him thrills catching bluegill, bass, and crappie. William's mother was a real help back then, as she realized his passion for fishing. When he would ask her to drive him to a lake, river, or stream for some trout fishing, she was happy to take him. Today, fifty years has gone by since those days, and he still lives and fishes close to where he grew up. Old School Basic Fishing was his first book on the fishing basics.  Solid gold Fishing in The Mother Lode, his second book, is more advanced: naming locations; seasons; products that work; techniques; and a bunch of good additional material! Since William's first book came out, to present time, he has done fishing seminars, fishing shows, scouting, reporting, local TV and radio, and became a part-time columnist. Naturally, his knowledge of fishing continued to grow doing all those fishing interviews and reports! Fishing is still his favorite sport, and, believe me, he has learned to catch fish quickly. William admits, it took a lifetime of 'trial and error learning' what you need to do, otherwise, he wasted time, and, time is important. William really enjoys fishing with friends. Getting a half-day of great entertainment, fun, and a few fish dinners, too... he laughs, what a sport huh? It does not get any better than fishing, if you ask William. He likes to read about fishing, watches it on television, and talks about fishing with people he meets. .

    FISHING IS A POSITIVE SPORT

We all know that fishing is a wonderful sport, right? But have we really looked at the positive things that fishing does for everybody? After reading this, you can decide how fishing in the Mother Lode would benefit someone you know…

Welcome to countless fishing adventures in the Mother Lode, with so many stories to tell. Welcome to providing healthy and wonderful tasting fish dinners for your family. And welcome to a sport that has healing benefits, both physical and psychological. Fishing is therapeutic for all of us by offering exercise, relaxation, thrills, and positive teamwork.

Fishing is special in that it is still monetarily rewarding; fishing is easily the best buy for our hard-earned money. Even if we have to pay to get in, the cost breakdown, compared to the entertainment we receive, is so inexpensive, nothing much compares.

The sport of fishing takes us to enchanted places. Fishing removes us from the hustle and bustle of everyday life and gives us time with nature’s wonders. Always real to life and normal, nature is constantly in awesome and inspiring order and a reward for our very existence.

We feel so good out there in the wonderful world of fishing. For a short time we are by ourselves and in complete control, working mentally and physically to get that nice fish in our ice-chest. No traffic, no noise, no schedules, no stress- just the magic of the great outdoors. Everybody is in a better mood when fishing!

In addition, fishing breaks through the age and gender barriers, what a wonderful way to strengthen the love for family members or to show a friend that you really care about them. Whether we are rich or poor, old or very young, male or female, fishing leaves life long memories for us all. The truth is, the child comes out in all of us when we are fishing. When you see children looking up to you with a priceless smile, knowing they will never forget you for sharing with them…this moment is hard to express with words. Fishing is a great way to reach a child, because, you care for them.

    SPECIAL FOR KIDS AND PARENTS

At this time I would like to do a special segment for the children and the parents… and anyone else getting started in this wonderful sport…

Hello kids, parents, and grandparents, too. This tackle and bait-fishing tip-segment is just for you. Be sure to take note and for sure you can use these tips to improve your fishing, save money, and have even more fun. First let me put these three thoughts in your mind: Timing, Location, and Bait. We will get back to these thoughts in just a bit...

First let’s start with tackle for a young boy or girl. Parents, for the child’s first tackle, I suggest buying them a small Shimano 1000 or Shimano 2000 spinning reel and a Shakespeare Excursion rod.

The Shimano reel holds 4lb, 6lb, or 8lb monofilament line and has rear drag control (which I really like). I found this reel on sale at a tackle shop for eleven dollars.

Note: Drag adjustment-knobs are located at the front or rear of reels. I feel the rear drag control is best, because it will be less complicated for the young fisherman to quickly adjust when needed.

The Shakespeare Excursion rod is five feet long, made of graphite, and has light/medium action with a wonderful cork handle. I bought the rod for fifteen dollars at Wal Mart.

Bottom line, a light/medium-action-spinning outfit is like the grown-ups use, and it will keep your young angler happy for a long time. This outfit is tough enough to last for years and works for all local fish- handling even up to the occasional 8-pound fish. Unlike a kiddie pole, your young fisherman will not outgrow this tackle for a long time. I think this selection is a win/win for kids and parents.

Now kids, the best way to fish is with natural baits. Three really good choices of natural baits are the earthworm, grasshopper, and cricket. Buy a pack of size 8 bait-hooks. These bait-hooks are just the right size for these baits. Remember this tip: A small hook will catch a big fish. Be sure to hide the hook inside your bait to keep the bait looking natural. Here’s another important tip: Use very little, or no, weight with your bait. This will keep the bait looking more natural to the fish, resulting in more bites! (Let the bait sink very slowly).

Another type of bait is the man-made, Berkley Power Bait. Power Bait is great bait for trout. Berkley makes several styles of Power Baits, but I like the dough kind that comes in a jar. My favorite colors of Power bait are glitter chartreuse and glitter rainbow.

With Berkley Power (dough) Bait you will need a special shaped hook to hold it on better. You will need to use a treble-hook. Buy a small pack of size 14 treble-hooks. Be careful with these hooks because they are very sharp! After covering the treble-hook with the Power Bait, squeeze the Power Bait from all angles to get all the cracks out. Next, dip the Power Bait in the water to harden it before you cast.

Power Bait floats and will stand straight up from the lake-bottom. This is good, because your bait will be more visible to the fish. Let me explain the set-up:

With Power Bait, you will need to use a sliding egg sinker.

A good choice is the (1/4-ounce) size for short casts and the (1/2-ounce) size for longer casts. Remember kids and parents, these are sliding sinkers, (the line slides through them) and they go on the line as follows: (First), put the end of your line through the hole in the sliding sinker. (Second), tie the treble-hook on the end of the line. (Third), pinch a BB size splitshot-type weight on the line about 18 inches above the treble-hook and below the sliding sinker. Again, the purpose of the sliding sinker is to allow the line to slide freely through it as a fish swims away with your bait. Watch the line!

OK. Remember Timing, Location, and Bait? Kids and parents, these three topics are very important when it comes to any fishing. If you want the best chance for fishing success, (for all your time and effort), make sure you have these topics covered.

Let’s look at the meaning of each: Timing-This means having your bait in the water when the fish are biting. Your best chance to catch a great bite is in the early morning just after first light. The only way to do this is to get up when it’s dark and early the day of your fishing trip. For best results, you need to be at your fishing spot just as it gets light enough to see. It’s up to you!

Location- Out of all the spots to fish, which one is the right one for your fishing trip? The way to find this answer is to do a pre-trip. By pre-trip I mean to seek the information by calling or visiting people at your fishing destination a few days before your fishing trip. Using this pre-trip strategy of seeking information of the current hot spots will put you at the good fishing locations and works on all popular lakes. Here are some places from which to gather information: marinas; local tackle shops; cleaning stations at the lake; watching and talking to fishermen; and reading newspaper and internet reports.

Bait- The list I gave you on natural baits and Power Baits will be good for most fishing. But just to be sure, while seeking information, be sure to ask what bait the fish were biting on. Also ask what color of bait, and what distance from the bank the fish were biting. (Missing a detail can mean less fish).

Finally kids and parents, information is always key to a fast limit! Sometimes I like to visit the lake, just to walk around and see what’s going on currently. Fishermen are easy to talk to and the information you hear and see is very valuable. Thanks for reading my book and good fishing together. Now let’s get back to more Solid Gold Fishing in The Mother Lode!
