About this ebook

When kitten Mani was one month old, a lady, who ran an animal welfare society, rescued him. Six months later, Mani is on his way to the vets surgery to be neutered. The cat box falls off the car seat, and he escapes. He is not used to living on the wild side, and he nearly meets his fate when two aggressive dogs chase him. Tom, an old battle-scarred tomcat, saves Mani and takes him under his paw, teaching him to survive in the wild.

His human owner offers a reward for his return, but Tom and Mani spend several exciting days together before she finds him and takes him home to the Leros Cat Hotel. Using the GCGthe Great Cat GrapevineMani invites Tom to visit him. Tom has an interesting journey across part of the island, making new friends on his way, before being reunited with Mani.

    Introduction

Greece is a very beautiful country. On the mainland there are forests full of bears and wolves, eagles and vultures. There are lakes, rivers, and waterfalls, mountains covered with forests, and fields full of flowers and butterflies. Greece has 6,000 islands, but only 227 have people living on them. But everywhere you go in Greece you will see many cats and dogs, and most of these do not have homes, so they don’t have warm beds to sleep in and quite often do not have enough food to eat. This story is set in the villages of Platanos, Pandeli, Aghia Marina and Krithoni on the Island of Leros in the Dodecanese. The names of the tavernas mentioned in Pandeli and Aghia Marina are fictitious.

Once upon a time, an English lady went to live on Leros, and she decided that someone needed to do something to help the many abandoned and unwanted kittens and cats, puppies and dogs. She started a small Animal Welfare Society, Leros Animal Lovers, and devoted her time to running a neutering programme so that there would not be quite so many unwanted kittens and puppies. She soon had a large family of kittens and cats who all had stories to tell – if only they could speak. Of the cats mentioned in this story, Mani, Sylvester, Didi, Mimi and Lucky were part of her cat family living with her at the Leros Cat Hotel. Long John was a three-legged stray living in Platanos. All the other cats and dogs in the story are a figment of the author’s imagination.

One of the many kittens she rescued was named Mani because he was found at Aghia Marina Harbour, and the Greek word for harbour is ‘LIMANI’ pronounced ‘LIMAHNEE’. This is Mani’s story.
