    About the Author

    In loving memory of

    • Richard Makunyane: your brave and fearless heart has taught me to stand firm in my own walk of life, forever grateful for your love and sacrifice. You are legend.

    • My aunt Hope: your kind heart and your love for reading has somehow rubbed off on me to eventually become an author. I can almost picture you reading this one on the front porch.

    • Masego Mathibe: though our friendship was brief, you’ve made me realise just how fragile human life is, and that has made me even more determined to live life to the fullest. You were such a beautiful soul, and your big smile was always best.

    ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS

T.E.Z Daddy Ndlovu: thank you for being that lifeline when one could be tempted to say that I was half past dead. I am grateful that you opened up to listen, that you spoke kind words, and that you believed in me always. I tell you, the love in your heart is your biggest asset from God in this life. Never doubt that.

My family: your love and support always challenge me to live and really go for it in God (in this life) with all I have. In countless ways you are what made this book possible. If ever I needed a reason to believe that God has favoured me, it is that He chose you for me and me for you. You all remain my biggest blessing to date in this life, and I salute you.

My God – my Father and my King: only my spirit can truly tell You how I feel about You when my words seem unable to. Thank You for understanding me when I couldn’t even understand who I was. You’ve been the light that shone the brightest in the darkest moments of my life; thank You so very much for loving me and finding me lovable. I look forward to seeing Your very intention for putting me on this earth come to pass in all its fullness and abundance in this life. My greatest life story and testimony remains that of a God who has managed to keep me (a mere man) sane when everything around me was insane. Your yes is all the permission I need to live life with all that I have. To You belongs all glory, honour, and praise. Thank You for saving me and never going back on Your Word. I love our time together.

To you, the reader holding this book in your hand: you are special to God, and you are special to me too. Thank you for your support; I truly appreciate it. My prayer as you read this and go through life is that you will really find it in your heart to rely on God with all that you have, to pursue a relationship with Him so alive that it will shock every living fibre in you. I pray that you will be successful in every facet of your life; that you will truly live out your calling, desire, and passion for God; and that your life will echo onto eternity. I wrote this book so that you will find peace and hope in what you are facing, dealing with your current situation, as opposed to where you should be. It won’t be long until He comes through for you – I just know it!

Stella Mashiloane: you spoke life into my life and really stirred up my heart at a very tender age. You remain the most influential, radical, and crazy Sunday school teacher this world has ever seen, and I love and appreciate all your struggles in grooming us to become who we are today. I tell you that your reward in heaven will be great. Even with all your heart problems and the many operations you had, you still trusted the God whom your natural eyes have never seen. I tell you, that spoke volumes into my spirit, shaping my never-say-die faith. Thank you always.

Tebogo Kgole and Kganyago Chokoe: for your efforts and input in proofreading my work, many thanks.

Katlego Miroa Myra Malekane: my man, thank you so much for your input on the cover. I pray that your passion takes you to even greater heights in God.

    CHAPTER 1

    If It Doesn’t Kill You

Often we hear people say, Well, if it doesn’t kill you, it makes you stronger. In reality, however, anything that fails to kill you succeeds in leaving you scarred. For instance, if someone shoots you and you survive, you’re left with a bullet wound that will eventually turn into a scar.

The same principle applies to situations that life often throws at us, but surviving them doesn’t automatically mean that we have overcome them. People have the misconception that once they survive an ordeal, they’ll emerge stronger, wiser, and more mature. But they don’t understand that whatever fails to kill them, whether spiritually, emotionally, or physically, leaves them scarred.

Surviving a rape, for instance, doesn’t guarantee that you’re strong. Instead, the ordeal leaves you traumatized, and you may never trust another man in your life or want to be held or embraced by anyone. Time doesn’t heal wounds. Instead, making a conscious decision to let go and let God allows you to begin to discover the victory that lies hidden like a treasure within the storm you’ve been through. That’s when your wounds heal.

God can improve any situation that we encounter in this life because the Bible says that He will never put more on us than we can bear (see 1 Cor. 10: 13). And with every situation, God will also provide a means of escape, for nothing that happens under the sun surprises God. Therefore, even when the enemy attacks us, he first needs to submit it to God for approval.

So we’re more than capable and more than equipped to handle every situation that seems to disorient our lives. The problem is that people fail to turn over their concerns to God so that He can achieve His plan for their lives through their struggles. God, if given a chance, is faithful to accomplish the good work He started in them. But like any other form of change, an effort needs to be made, for there can be no harvest when nothing is sown.

Physical wounds eventually heal because a medical professional treats them; the wounds aren’t left to chance. In the same sense, change can’t occur when no effort is taken. Yet we often fail to understand that it’s really not by our effort that we achieve change, but rather by putting our faith in the effort that Christ exerted on the cross on our behalf.

It’s amazing how, when we begin to place our faith in God’s efforts, He suddenly directs us to where we ought to spend our time and energy. Consider, for instance, a person who wants to lose weight. Doing nothing won’t automatically decrease his or her weight. First, the person needs to accept the fact that he or she has a problem. Second, he or she needs to assess the problem and, third, know what it will take to reach a solution. Once the person does this, then all of his or her time, money, and energy can be directed at successfully losing weight.

So whatever you do, don’t just sit around and hope that, in time, your problems will go away or that you will be stronger, wiser, and more mature.

In life there are two types of people: those who make things happen and those who wait for things to happen. Often, unfortunately, by the time something does happen, it’s too late to change course.

Often people want to leave things to chance, and when nothing transpires, or rather as the situation deteriorates, they get to a place of hopelessness and defeat, not realizing that in Christ they can face any challenge with confidence and boldness, for He has won it all for them.

Although time is required to put things into perspective, nothing really is solved until you decide to be brave enough to change the course of your life. Because one thing is certain in life: you will go through disorienting circumstances, but that doesn’t mean all is lost. But you do need to understand that surviving an ordeal isn’t the end of that ordeal but the beginning of the recovery process that will yield character, purpose, and meaning in your life.

Your biggest challenge isn’t surviving the ordeal but moving on afterward by making the most of what life has thrown your way. A lot of people tend to give up on their goals and let go of their dreams simply because things didn’t unfold the way they had played it out in their heads. It’s easy to imagine that delay somehow nullifies God’s faithfulness to His promise. On the contrary, what He said will always
