About this ebook

This book attempts to portray the positive side of policing. There are a myriad of negative perceptions of police stories out in our social media today. Majority of our encounters with a police officer is presented in a negative manner. This book collects and presents the voices of several brave police officers, both men and women of various ages and length of service with various departments. They wholeheartedly shared their most influential stories of positive encounters. Their stories were told in their voices and some of the individuals they positively affected were included. In my years of professional research, this is one of the most influencing and impacting endeavor I have ever embarked upon, the reality of their voices were definitely represented and clearly depicted throughout this book.

The dedication for this book is twofold. It is dedicated to Officer Chris Yung and James Michael Counts. Officer Chris Yung was tragically killed in an accident on December 31, 2012, while on duty. Officer Yung leaves behind his loving wife Robin and three youngsters—Bate, Clayton, and Paige. Officer Yung was a dear friend of mine and sat right next to me during the academy (2005). Chris, you will always be loved and respected. The relationship that my family and your family have developed over the years will definitely continue. I never said this to you before, but your stereotypical jokes and really bad gas issue lightened the mood and tension and subsequently got me through the academy, even though sitting next to you meant that I would be gassed all week—not always a fun thought, I clearly remember you telling me that you ate a lot of rice and as a result had gas issues. God bless you and your family. One thing that the Courageous Resolution Commitment has made me realize is that we as police officers should be strong men for our families. You have nothing to worry about in terms of your family being protected; we will protect them, and I promise to be present in the lives of your children, as they need positive, strong men in their growing lives. May your soul rest in perfect peace; you are sorely missed.

This book is also dedicated to my father-in-law, James Michael Counts, aka Mike Jones. Mike passed away on September 1, 2012. Mike was a dear friend and practically became my family before his passing. I will always love and respect you, sir. You have nothing to worry about regarding your daughter Jen. She is safe, and I will protect and cherish her as long as I live. Even through you knew little about doctoral dissertations, you always encouraged and appreciated me and called me Da Doctor. That was much appreciated. You knew everything about your guns, and they are in good and respectable hands. Lastly, I clearly remember you telling one of the nurses at the nursing home that I was your son. The nurse was very confused and did not believe you. She asked, Mr. Counts! How could he be your son when you are white and he is black and African as well? I stood outside the door and listened to you described me as your son in all the good ways I could never have imagined. Thank you for thinking of me as your son. Our relationship will always be cherished and celebrated. It brought joy to my heart to know that you loved me. You will be sorely missed; may your soul rest in perfect peace. Jen and I will pay your respects in various ways in the succeeding years as long as we live. God bless you, Mike Jones.

My last dedication is to my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Without your unfailing guidance, nothing is possible. I am thankful and grateful that you are constantly in my life.

    Acknowledgments

First, a special thank you to my best friend and wife, Jennifer Marie Wurie, who assisted and supported me throughout this project. Her constructive feedback was greatly appreciated and much needed throughout as I compiled these stories. Even though her critiques were hard to accept and receive at times, they were appreciated. I have to give a special thank you and much appreciation to retired Chief Deane and acting Chief Lieutenant Colonel Barry Barnard (Prince William County, Virginia, Police). These two distinct leaders welcomed and encouraged me to pursue this project. To all those who participated in this book, my coauthors, I could not thank you enough. Without your assistance and participation, this project would not have come to light. You made the time to put something together and contributed to this project. It is my pleasure and honor to feature you in this project. Officer C. Johnson, even though you are in school full time for your master’s degree and work full time, you still made time for my project. I cannot thank you enough; you are very much appreciated. Officer Chris Moore, my friend and brother in Christ, thank you for all your guidance and help throughout this project. You and your family will always be special to me. Thank you for involving me in the Cop’s Courageous study and ceremony. Officer Richard McConnaughey, my white African brother, thank you for your contribution and encouragement throughout this process. Officer and retired Major Mike Lomonaco, your contribution and encouragement were also very much appreciated. Thank you very much for your service and for always being there when I needed something. Officer Errica Figueroa, I cannot thank you enough for contributing to this project. Your contribution definitely puts a positive twist in these reflections. Thank you for your continuous inspiration and leadership in your endeavors. Officer Sarah Sclafani, I knew you for less than a year when I asked for your participation, and you responded within two days with a fabulous reflection. I cannot thank you enough for your dedication and service, I have never worked alongside you; however, your personality, dedication, and willingness to share your reflections demonstrate the awesome person you are. Keep up the good work, ma’am. Officer Raymond Sherwood, what can I say about you? You came up with two reflections very fast in order to contribute to this book. I cannot thank you enough. Thank you for what you do and always being the jokester you are. Officer J. Brown, my man, your reflections were awesome, and I really appreciate your input. Completing and participating in the Courageous Commitment ceremony with you was an honor, sir. Officer Richmond Appau, you are my real African brother—thank you very much for your inclusion. Your big-brother and religious guidance over the years have always gotten me through tough times. Officer Patricio, you are one of my mentors and always have been. I cannot tell you how much I appreciate your participation in this project. Most importantly; you really shocked me when you included one of your reflections about our first encounter. You are an example to us all. Officer L. E. Pena, my Spanish African brother, I cannot thank you enough for participating in this project. We have been through a lot; you have inspired me in so many ways you do not even realize: the good times, the bad times, the sad times, the dangerous times, not to mention the mischievous times. You have always been there
