As a CEO of large company, it can get pretty lonely at the top and often the only place to look for advice and guidance is to look within oneself. CEOs need to make decisions based on honed experience and informed instinct and the barriers to impactful decision making may only be our own reservations about our own capabilities…..reservations that can lead to hesitation that may cost millions or billions in lost opportunities. Joe’s ability to help his readers recognize these barriers and expose the inner thief can help many avoid any and all executional missteps. The value of the vision in his book is immeasurable.
—Chris Downie

I WOULD LIKE TO THANK GOD FOR MY JOURNEY IN life and the experiences that led me to write this book. Life above and beyond the Rim is dedicated to all the people who strive to break through their barriers to have ultimate success in life. To those people who have supported my endeavors to give something of value to every individual who comes in contact with me. All the people who have allowed me to coach them and lead them, trusting and allowing me to go inside their souls to help repair them from the inside out. To the owners and management of the companies, groups, and institutions that gave me the privilege to speak and impact their people. To the people who sat in those seats listening and opening up their minds for me to deliver my concept. To my friends, family, siblings, business partners, and peers for the experiences and for being true to who they are, because what I have learned through our journeys has taught me some of life’s most precious and valuable lessons.
This book is dedicated to my son, Chase Courtney, who makes me feel like the most important person on earth—by looking up to me, yearning for my attention, and loving me unconditionally. You, Chase, are the most important part of my legacy and the people you and I touch together. My wish is that you use this book as a tool to achieve an empowered, successful, fulfilled, and complete life. You have taught me more about the importance of the value of life and why we need to empower people than anything I’ve ever done.
Everyone has had a dream at some point and time and was born with the ability to be great at something in his or her life. Through our own personal journeys, we have been beaten, battered, and bruised from the challenges life has thrown at us until we have forgotten that we are capable and have even lost our ability to dream again. Deep inside of us, we unconsciously know that there is greatness from within that is waiting to be unleashed. This book is dedicated to unlocking that greatness so that you can soar above and beyond and have the success in life you deserve!
PREFACE
H ELLO! MY NAME IS JOE COURTNEY. MY LIFE HAS been a collection of amazing experiences, some of which I will share with you in this book. I thank you for sharing your personal space with me and using this book as a tool to assist you in your journey to ultimate success. You might have seen my life as a NBA basketball player; you might have walked through one of the homes I designed and built, or maybe you attended one of my speaking events or my Above the Rim coaching seminars.
I’m an entrepreneur who has been fortunate enough to have achieved success in numerous endeavors. Like everyone who strives for success, I have had challenges that go with such a journey. When I went through challenges, I used to ask God, Why me?
Sound familiar? Well, I recently found out why me.
Over time, I realized I have a certain perspective that has been the X factor for me as I’ve gone through my life; I’m six feet nine, tall enough to see a lot from up here. This perspective has assisted me in my journey to reach success. People who have been fortunate enough to achieve success have not completed their missions until they have shared their experiences with others to pave the way and simplify the process for others to also achieve success. This creates a butterfly effect—success multiplies each generation it touches.
That’s why I’m writing this book. For years, I thought I was alone in the positive and negative experiences I’ve been through. But over time, as I moved from one field of work to the next, I realized there was a common denominator not only within me but also within all people; it just takes on a different look, a different face. As I kept seeing this, I realized I needed to share what I had to say with the world because I feel it would be of value to others in unlocking their hidden gems.
I was told once that when you compile your experiences, what you learn from your successes as well as your failures constitutes your life’s work.
My true purpose for writing this book is to document the ten key principles I have used to reach successes in my life and also to compare, reference, and validate them with the works of some of the great leaders of our time. I’ve played on a world-championship team and was coached by the best coaches in the world, I’ve trained with the some of the best physical and mental trainers in the world, and I’ve run my own companies and have been mentored by the best in the industry.
I’ve taken key elements from all my experiences to formulate the information I’m passing on to you. Through speaking and coaching, I’ve tested these principles and found they are truly effective in helping people reach success on all levels in multiple types of industries. I present to you my life’s work, Life above and beyond the Rim. Enjoy, and God bless!
ACKNOWLEDGMENTS
I express my gratitude to the people who inspired me through my journey and the amazing people who were put in my path to create the experiences I’ve gone through in the evolution of this book.
As an artist, I created work people have shown their appreciation for, and I’ve been humbled to be appreciated for my work. But I acknowledge that like the homes I’ve built and my NBA highlights, this book was inspired by my past experiences and other books I’ve read, leaders I’ve been led by, speakers I’ve heard, and lessons I’ve learned. The following are some of those people.
Michael Jordan
Thank you for making the time I spent with the three-peat Chicago Bulls one of the best experiences of my life. Thank you for the private life lessons you’ve given me on and off the court and for making sure I was taken care of. You showed me what work really was and what true leaders do. Thanks for believing in me and telling me that I belonged in the NBA and that I was put on earth to do something great.
Tim Grover
You showed me my limits in life and performance were only in my mind. You treated me like a professional athlete, and then you made me one, and I was in the best physical and mental shape in my life. You are the best in the world at what you do. Thank you.
Phil Jackson
You taught me the power of leading without words and that silence can be strength. You taught me the importance of a system and creating a winning culture of accountability. You made me a champion. Thank you.
Charles Barkley
What can I say, Chuckster
? Thank you for showing me how to work hard and play hard. You took care of me when I was supposed to be taking care of you, and you told me to keep my money until I was rich when I offered to pay. I had the most fun in my life while playing with you.
Jerry Colangelo
You saw the fire in my eyes, took a chance on me, and gave me the opportunity to prove myself at a pivotal time in my life. You are a class act. I met my beautiful wife, had my son, and moved my family to Arizona because you took that chance on me. You’re the best owner the NBA has ever seen. Thank you.
Paul Westphal
Thank you for playing me to my strengths. I couldn’t dribble with my left hand when I came to the NBA, but you ignored that and focused on what I could do. You empowered me. Thank you.
Lionel Hollins
You fought hard for Coach Westphal and Jerry Colangelo to give me a shot. I wouldn’t have played for the Suns if you hadn’t believed in me first at the Utah Summer League. Thank you for recognizing my potential and standing up for me.
Eddie Johnson
Thank you for being there with advice throughout my career. You are a valuable asset and friend.
John Lang
You took an interest in me and reminded me to keep my head high no matter what was going on in my life. You took time and moved meetings to listen to me and provided a confidential, safe place for me to vent my ideas. You are an example of someone taking 100 percent responsibility for his life. Thank you.
Mack Newton
You are a once-in-a-lifetime leader. They truly broke
