Chapter 1: Getting Started with Autodesk Inventor 2019
Introduction to Autodesk Inventor 2019
Autodesk Inventor is a parametric and feature-based system that allows you to create 3D parts, assemblies, and 2D drawings. The design process in Autodesk Inventor is shown below.
4.jpgIn Inventor, everything is controlled by parameters, dimensions, or constraints. For example, if you want to change the position of the hole shown in figure, you need to change the dimension or relation that controls its position.
1.jpgThe parameters and constraints that you set up allow you to have control over the design intent. The design intent describes the way your 3D model will behave when you apply dimensions and constraints to it. For example, if you want to position the hole at the center of the block, one way is to add dimensions between the hole and the adjacent edges. However, when you change the size of the block, the hole will not be at the center.
You can make the hole to be at the center, even if the size of the block changes. To do this, click on the hole feature and select Edit Sketch. Next, delete the dimensions and create a diagonal construction line. Apply the Coincident constraint between the hole point and the midpoint of the diagonal construction line. Next, click Finish Sketch on the ribbon.
Now, even if you change the size of the block, the hole will always remain at the center.
The other big advantage of Autodesk Inventor is the associativity between parts, assemblies and drawings. When you make changes to the design of a part, the changes will take place in any assembly that it’s a part of. In addition, the 2D drawing will update automatically.
Starting Autodesk Inventor 2019
To start Autodesk Inventor 2019, click the Autodesk Inventor 2019 icon on your computer screen. To start a new part or assembly or drawing file, then click New option button under Launch panel on the Get Started Tab. Click Metric under the Templates folder on the Create New File dialog to start a new part document. Then, click Standard(mm). ipt under Part – Create 2D and 3D objects, and then click the Create button.
File Types
Various file types that can be created in Autodesk Inventor are given below.
Part (.ipt)
Assembly (.iam)
Drawing (.dwg)
Sheet Metal (.ipt)
Presentation (.ipn)
User Interface
The following image shows the Autodesk Inventor application window.
Environments in Autodesk Inventor
There are five main environments available in Autodesk Inventor: Part, Assembly, Drawing, Presentation, and Sheet Metal. In addition, there are some additional environments to create exploded views, renderings, simulations, and so on.
Part environment
This environment has all the commands to create a 3D part model. It has a ribbon located at the top of the screen. The ribbon is arranged in a hierarchy of tabs, panels, and commands. Panels such as Sketch, Create, and Modify consists of commands, which are grouped based on their usage. Panels in turn are grouped into various tabs. For example, the panels such as Sketch, Create, and Modify are located in the 3D Model tab.
Assembly environment
This environment is used to create assemblies. The Assemble tab of the Ribbon has various commands, which will allow you to assemble and modify the components.
The 3D Model tab in the Assembly environment has commands, which will help you to create
