ABOUT SHUNRYU SUZUKI
Shunryu Suzuki was one of the best-known early Zen pioneers of the United States. This Japanese Soto-Zen priest was the founder of the San Francisco Zen Center and, Tassajara Zen Mountain Center, the first Buddhist monastery outside Asia. He was the key figure in popularizing Zen in US and his compiled teachings, ‘Zen Mind, Beginner’s Mind’, is considered as a spiritual classic and the most recommended and influential book on Zen Buddhism.

At an age of 12, he chose to undertake Zen practice and became a follower of his father’s disciple, Gyokujun So-on Suzuki at Zoun-in. The next year, he got ordained as a Soto-Zen monk with the name Shogaku. Enrolled as a student at the Soto-Zen college in Tokyo, he graduated in Zen Buddhism and English by 1930. After a training at Eihei-ji, he was appointed as the abbot of Rinso-in where he continued during the tough times of World War II. In 1959, his master assigned Shunryu to Soko-ji, the only Soto temple in San Francisco. This 55 year old
