    A Novella

    Prologue

You seriously mean to tell me that you can have regular sex with a man and not want a relationship out of him? I don’t believe you for a second. The woman folded her arms across her chest and shook her head.

Milly smirked. "You better get with the times boo. This is the 21st century and the dating game has changed from when we were 16. As a matter of fact, dating is all but extinct. These are the days of casual sex, hanging out and just chilling. Everything is instant and men have stopped putting in the work for a sit-down, eight course meal of a relationship because they can get microwave pussy for the price of a few tongue emojis and a dick pic. So, unless you decide to bat for the other team, if you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em."

But wouldn’t you rather beat ‘em?

Oh sweetie, I take it you have never had mind-blowing sex with a man you weren’t in a relationship with. Once you’ve tried it, you’ll sing a different tune.

Okay Milly, now you just sound crazy. I hear you talking but I know you want a husband and a family one day. You are too damn stubborn to give up on that just because the boys won’t get in line. I know you.

Milly shrugged. I’m not trying to convince you of anything. It’s your choice to believe me or don’t. I’m not affected either way.

The other woman held up her hands in the symbolic gesture for surrender. Hey, I trust that you know yourself better than I know you. If you say that you can handle this type of lifestyle I have no choice but to believe you. Now let’s change the subject because I am starving and we need to pick a place for lunch.

    Chapter One

    Milly

I rolled my eyes and sucked my teeth at my happy ass cousin.

Girl be real, everybody ain’t finding love on a damn sex site!

Francesca scoffed, so I had to hit her with the real deal.

Yes, bitch. You found your man on a sex site. Don’t debate me, it is what it is. Now look, I’m not judging you for that.

She raised an eyebrow at me.

"Okay I’m lyin’. I am judging your nasty ass, but that’s not the point. You lucked up with Thomas. Mr. Cum on This Dick turned into Mr. What You Think about Changing Your Last Name? and I’m happy for you. Both you and Nixon deserve it. But I need you to chill out for real. I’m using JustOneNight.com for its intended purpose and I’m having fun doing it."

Francesca just shook her head but she was smiling so I knew we were good. Damn, well just kick my little advice to the curb then.

I laughed before pulling her into a hug and dropping a loud kiss on her cheek. Shut up, you know I love you. You just need to let me fuck random niggas in peace.

She burst out laughing which was my goal. Hey Pot, my name is Kettle. I believe you called me a nasty ass earlier.

I rolled my eyes at her again. Yeah, whatever.

We chatted for a little bit longer before she left to get ready for tonight and I headed into my bathroom to do the same. She was coming back to my apartment in a couple of hours so that we could ride together to Capital Grille, an upscale restaurant owned by her boyfriend. The same boyfriend she met on JustOneNight.com, a matchmaking website that focused on pairing up couples for safe one night stands.

I witnessed their relationship morph from something that was intended to be strictly sex, to friendship, while my cousin falsely denied having any romantic feelings for the man for six whole months, to finally a loving, committed relationship. That was all the advertisement I needed to sign up on JON with a quickness.

Three months and four one night stands later was all it took for me to realize that maybe, just maybe my cousin and her boo were the exceptions to the rule. Apparently one night stands really were all about fucking. Don’t get me wrong. I met some great guys and of course had some really, really good sex. That aside, I can’t deny that none of those men were interested in more than what they signed up for.

My hope had made me foolish.

    Derrell

I took a sip from my beer and glanced around the restaurant – my restaurant. My eyes landed on Thomas and I grinned. He made sure to remind me at every chance that Capital Grille was half mine. I shook my head. On paper that may be true but this restaurant was his baby. He’d had the plans for a then nameless Capital Grille since before we entered undergrad.

By the time I’d received my B.S. in Criminal Justice and graduated from the police academy, Thomas had 8 years of experience under his belt and a business plan in his hand. When he mentioned that he was looking for investors I didn’t hesitate to hand over a portion of my inheritance from my late grandfather’s estate. Three years later our restaurant was flourishing and tonight’s party was evidence of that.

The Browntown Weekly, a nationally recognized black-owned magazine had just bestowed Capital Grille with the highly coveted number one ranking in their biennial 100 Best Restaurants list. It is an amazing accomplishment and almost unheard of for a relatively new restaurant.

I was circling the room, greeting people and making small talk when I spotted Francesca a few feet away speaking to the chef of a nearby French restaurant. Finally someone I know! I started to make my way to towards her when she stepped away revealing another woman and I froze where I stood. I didn’t know if this new woman was the cousin Francesca always mentioned when I saw her or not but whoever she was, she was fine as hell.

Her bottle shaped body was poured into a knee-length yellow dress that molded to her curves and complemented her caramel skin tone beautifully. Unnecessarily high spiked heels put her toned calves on display and had her nice round ass sitting right. Her fantastic package was topped off with luscious jet-black hair that hung down her back in thick waves.

After I finished my blatant perusal I continued in her direction. She was laughing, seemingly at something the male chef had said so I stopped just behind her to wait my turn at engaging her in conversation.

"You’ve not had good French toast until you’ve had my French toast." The chef leered at her with what sounded like an obvious invitation. I felt a twinge of annoyance that I might not get a chance at her but held my tongue.

She wagged a finger at the chef’s words.

Come on Pierre. Need I remind you that ‘Breakfast is a privilege no one deserves.’? She put a hand on her hip and my eyes followed the motion, lingering on her delicious looking ass for a second. I looked up just in time to see Chef What’s-His-Face give her an embarrassed grin before looking past her and catching my eye briefly.

    I may have…misspoke.

She laughed again and he walked off. I should
