About this ebook

INSTANT NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER!

Now being developed as a television series with Eva Longoria and ABC!

“Rarely have I read a book that challenged me to see myself in an entirely new light, and was at the same time laugh-out-loud funny and utterly absorbing.”—Katie Couric

“This is a daring, delightful, and transformative book.”—Arianna Huffington, Founder, Huffington Post and Founder & CEO, Thrive Global

“Wise, warm, smart, and funny. You must read this book.”—Susan Cain, New York Times best-selling author of Quiet

From a New York Times best-selling author, psychotherapist, and national advice columnist, a hilarious, thought-provoking, and surprising new book that takes us behind the scenes of a therapist’s world—where her patients are looking for answers (and so is she).

One day, Lori Gottlieb is a therapist who helps patients in her Los Angeles practice. The next, a crisis causes her world to come crashing down. Enter Wendell, the quirky but seasoned therapist in whose office she suddenly lands. With his balding head, cardigan, and khakis, he seems to have come straight from Therapist Central Casting. Yet he will turn out to be anything but.

As Gottlieb explores the inner chambers of her patients’ lives — a self-absorbed Hollywood producer, a young newlywed diagnosed with a terminal illness, a senior citizen threatening to end her life on her birthday if nothing gets better, and a twenty-something who can’t stop hooking up with the wrong guys — she finds that the questions they are struggling with are the very ones she is now bringing to Wendell.

With startling wisdom and humor, Gottlieb invites us into her world as both clinician and patient, examining the truths and fictions we tell ourselves and others as we teeter on the tightrope between love and desire, meaning and mortality, guilt and redemption, terror and courage, hope and change.

Maybe You Should Talk to Someone is revolutionary in its candor, offering a deeply personal yet universal tour of our hearts and minds and providing the rarest of gifts: a boldly revealing portrait of what it means to be human, and a disarmingly funny and illuminating account of our own mysterious lives and our power to transform them.

Editor's Note

Editor’s Pick…

This moving memoir takes you inside the minds of both therapists and patients. Gottlieb opens up about her experiences on both sides of the couch in such a personal and revealing way that it’ll resonate with anyone grappling with finding bigger meanings in their life. (And it’ll make you realize we all could probably use a therapist).

I cannot stop reading. The way she wrote it was very humorous and fun. Now I'm left with simple sadness after finishing this book. I feel so empty and sad that it has to end.

I am watching my intelligent, amazing, beautiful, well educated, highly experienced 35 year old, social work as a profession daughter go through one of the darkest periods of her life. I cannot wait to get this book in her hands. It is very positively changing many of my perspectives about dealing with life’s challenges, I know it can deeply influence hers.

I don't usually read a lot nonfiction books, but this book just called for me.

I'm not sure what to write about this book. It contained multiple sessions as well as Lori's own experiences with life.
I loved the ending, and that this particular ending is about ending things, and how something's end doesn't mean that that something is completely over, because the experiences, the memories live with us.
I glimpsed inside a therapist head, and learned about myself while reading this book. Don't draw conclusions, you cannot self diagnose yourself, you'll enter a different mindset, and destroy all the clishés in your head. Old people fuck, a young woman dying from cancer can have a funeral where people cry, and even therapists need to go to therapy, because we are human and we have needs, and problems.

A great look into and understanding of the question commonly wondered, "What is it like for a therapist on the receiving end?" Gottlieb gives a rejuvenating and bluntly honest glimpse into the reality of working in the mental health profession inside and outside the cushioned therapy room.

You'll laugh, you'll cry, you'll learn and you may even relate.
    An uplifting read.

A beautifully written nonfiction that I hope everyone read/experience at least once in their life. No matter how small, I think you'll get something precious out of this. This is exactly something that I need to read right now, so I want to thank anyone who make this book happened.

I don't read books anymore because the way certain books are written is not engaging enough for me, perhaps because I can't relate to the protagonists emotions or the choice of words and the sentence style is too bombastic or snobbish but this book is different. It relayed the complexities of human relations and emotions in such a simple way that a short attention span person like me read from cover to cover in one go! The writer was able to make me feel her emotions, like I was the one standing in her shoes at that time. I cried, I laughed and I sympathised, so many emotions welled inside me which is what a book is meant to do. Made me feel interested in reading again. Maybe it's because I went to medical school, have an interest in writing and want to be a psychiatrist too that I was able to relate to the writer so much.
