By Patrick Bunker
George Stout was born in Winterset, Iowa on October 5, 1897. Winterset is located in the south western region of Iowa and it is a destination that contains some historical significance. There are many landmarks that are over 100 years old in Winterset and it is also the birthplace of the famous western actor John Wayne.
George had a normal childhood in a safe and welcoming town. He realized that he had a passion for learning at an early age and he did quite well with his studies. George attended the Winterset public school system and after graduating high school he decided to enlist with the United States Armed Forces.
World War 1 was taking place and every available man in America was eager to serve their country. George had a set of skills that allowed him to work away from the dangerous front lines and help the other soldiers. His medical training allowed for him to serve in a military hospital where he treated soldiers who had been injured in battle.
