Explanations:
It has been said that we should write what we know. Well, I know about being a drunk and an addict to many things. I know about the struggle and the life. I also know about deliverance, and failure and freedom. I am writing this because I care about people who are just like me, and I want them free. If you are reading this, then I’ll bet you want to be free, and I will also bet that God has led you here. One way or another it was Him. Oh no! Did I use the G
word? Some folks don’t like that. Some folks do not believe, and some believers will not agree with me. But, that’s ok. I’m not writing for them. I’m writing for you. For the person who has lost everything. I’m writing for the person who has tried and tried and failed. For the person who is barely hanging on.
This book is about demons. It is about truth. It’s about the Spirit. Trust me; I am not a preachy, preachy person. I never have been. I’m also not going to blame you or guilt you. I’m just going to explain some things that you might have never heard, or that you might be glad you have heard again.
This book is not a 12 step program. But, there are many things that I will say that will mirror what AA says. The reason for this is because AA was started as a Christian program. The concepts are Christian. If you are using AA, then you’re following a spiritual based program. What you will read here can add to that, or it can be used separately. However, I would recommend using whatever means is available to help you. It’s a war out there, and there is a battle for your soul and life. You have an enemy who wants to murder you, rob you, and destroy everything they can. But, I’m sure you already know this, somewhere down deep.
Consider the destruction that has already occurred in your life. Sure, we have all kinds of excuses about how someone did us wrong, and in many ways they did. But, the destruction in our life is real. We have all the wasted time; all the wasted life. We have all the great things we wanted to do and could have done, but we didn’t. Course, we are all different. Maybe you reached the heights of success in your field and it all fell apart, or maybe you never felt you were worth much.
We have the destruction of our reputation. We claim it doesn’t matter, but psychologists plainly show that humans are a social creature; but for some reason we just don’t care what others think. Why? Many of us are Anti-Social; we don’t want to be around people. We hate people. Why? We have our reasons. Or we think we do. I’m getting to a point here, so keep reading. I’ve been through all of this and more.
We see the destruction of our work life, and our future goals; the loss of jobs or the lack of the ability to get a job. We have no desire, no hope, no ideas, and no inspiration. We are just working for the weekend. We have failure in school, or mediocrity; not doing our best. Of course, not all of us are the same. Some are great successes, but are still hurting and ruined in many ways, or not giving their all. They are feeling it beginning to slip away.
We have destroyed our families. We have driven away our friends, and those who cared about us for some odd reason. We have even hurt people when we’ve been stone cold sober. I have literally destroyed my entire family. Why?
We have the destruction of our health. That beer gut, you crack jokes about, and that terrible cough in the morning. The fear of what you did last night and what diseases might come of it. The gnawing suspicion that you need to cut back, because you’re heading toward something that will kill you, or even worse, keep you from partying. As if anything really could ever keep you from the party. There is nothing that would keep me from going out and getting high and drunk. I was drunk before I even went out.
So, it has to make you wonder. Why on earth would human beings allow and enjoy something that is obviously ruining us? There are many answers given, such as chemical dependence, genetics, environment, accidental, self-medicating, mental health, spiritual imbalance, sin, and probably some that I have forgotten. I will say that all of these are true or partially true. They are all just parts of a big whole.
Do you think that if you could just get over the chemical dependence, whether a chemical outside the body or a chemical your body produces, that you would no longer be an addict or drunk? Yes, I say drunk. I know it’s rude, but it’s what I have been. So, I can say it.
Or maybe you think that if you could just change your genetics, or your environment, or your past it would be ok? Maybe you think that if you could fix the problem that makes you feel the need to self-medicate, or get better pills for depression, or get your Chakras all lined up and cleaned out, you’ll stop using?
Maybe you think that if you just got rid of your sin, you’d be able to stop struggling and battling the desire to get drunk or high, or party, or screw, or eat giant chocolate cakes, or drink cup after cup after cup of diet soda, or coffee?
Ever notice that when you stop drinking or getting high for a while, you start becoming addicted to other things? Even things that is not harmful. I drink coffee all day. But, I was also addicted to bass fishing. Laugh if you must, but activities can become addictive and waste our lives or destroy us. We become workaholics. We spend all our money and time on various pursuits that hurt us and our families.
Ever thought that being addicted is not a bad thing? That maybe the fact that humans have the ability to get addicted, is for a purpose? How in the world did that person become a musical master? It was lots and lots of practice. They were devoted. Or maybe they became addicted to it? I know I am mixing terms here. But, still. What if all the effort we put into our addictions, was instead focused on making money, or helping people, or bettering our lives?
We think that if we could only get our lives straight; and get everything lined up correctly; we would stop being controlled by our demons. We think that if we could only stop fighting our demons we would be ok. Or we wonder what if we did not have these demons at all.
Have you ever considered this term Demons
and what it means? Normally people are using the term loosely to mean problems of all sorts, or mental issues, or past issues, or all of it. But, when I say demons, I am talking literally about spiritual entities that exist outside of ourselves who seek to harm us and use us for their own purpose.
That is a major focus of this book. Demonic forces that seek to destroy us and how they use addictions to do it. Yes, demons use many other things. But, we are focusing on addictions in this book, at this time. I might mention other things, or you might notice other connections, but the focus is addiction, and demonic influence.
Now, do not run away! I will speak of all the various things that I mentioned above, genetics, chemical dependence, mental health, etc. and you might hear some new things that you can add to your tools of battle against the enemy that seeks to destroy you. Even if you do not accept the idea of spiritual things, you might see something that will help you. The bottom line is that I want to help you. Not spread religion. Not trick you into being some church person. I want you free. I have written this book for that purpose, and even though you hate 80% of it, that 20% might have something you can use, or you can give to someone else to save their life, or soul.
Chapter 2
My Story
…And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free
---Jesus (John 8:32)
I was born in Du Quoin, Illinois, a small town in the southern rural areas of the state. I was born into a family that were hard working and hard partying people, on my father’s side. They drank and fought and did all the things that went along with it. This was the way of life for generations. They were coal miners and union men, eating bar-b-que, frying fish, and drinking beer was part of it and just how we relaxed. I’m not condemning it. It’s just how it was. It’s how I grew up.
My family frequented and practically ran a local club in town at the time. So, in essence all the other members of the local club became my family as well. Again, I’m not condemning. I love my family and I’m glad for my upbringing. It made me who I am. This was the genetics and environment I came into. This was the generations of life that molded me. Many of you have grown up in a similar place.
My mother’s side was the opposite. They were farm folk from way back who were strong Baptists. My mother and grandparents took me to church regularly when I was young. I prayed to receive Christ on a trip to Champaign, Illinois, and was baptized soon after. My mother always told
