    This novel’s story is fictitious.

Certain long-standing institutions, public offices and agencies are mentioned, but the characters involved are entirely imaginary. Any resemblance to actual persons living or deceased is entirely coincidental.

Life is a theatrical masterpiece, for which each of us is handed a part.

It is up to us to interpret it.

    PROLOGUE

    Mexico, September 19th, 1985

The air was still as the sun slowly surfaced above the rooftops, creating an orange glow reflective of another warm, early autumn day. The morning dew gently and quietly bid farewell as the sun warmed the surfaces it caressed.

Underneath the earth’s serene surface, pockets of pressure were forming from the buildup of gasses deep within the earth’s core. Coupled with friction between the tectonic plates, conditions were ripe to lead to an event wholly expected by scientists, but unimaginable to humanity.

    PART I

    CHAPTER ONE

    Mexico City, September 19th, 1985, 0700

Juan Fernandez, a small grocery business owner, was sweeping away the dust that had accumulated in front of his store overnight, along with scraps of litter left by youths too much in a hurry to consume their purchased food item to bother finding a bin. He contentedly went about his routine, as today was special for him and Maria, his wife of twelve years: a wedding anniversary.

A familiar voice called to him from across the street—his younger brother Julio, to whom he had been a mentor ever since the untimely passing of their father from cancer.

"Como stamos?" Juan greeted his brother, leading him into the shop to have a quick coffee before opening for business.

    "Bien, Juanito," he replied affectionately.

It looks like another beautiful day, not too hot, not too cold. Perfect for the surprise I have planned for Maria.

Julio stood in silence concealing his concern. Had he just felt a small ripple in the ground beneath his feet, or was it his imagination?

What? Am I not making my baby brother’s coffee to his specifications? continued Juan, noticing Julio’s demeanor. He let out a hearty laugh.

How are Maria and the kids? asked Julio, brushing off what he may have felt as insignificant.

Just fine, Juan replied as he served the coffee in small porcelain cups he had purchased in Italy a few years earlier. Isabella and Marco were twins and had just turned ten.

Soon they will be making us our morning coffee, they are both old and tall enough to reach the stove! More of Juan’s laughter filled the shop. Julio just smiled, as without uncertainty he felt another tremor.

Juan’s small family lived in the apartment above the shop. While sitting around the breakfast table eating, they too had felt something.

    CHAPTER TWO

    Mexico City, September 19th, 1985, 0719

Now the earth made its presence felt. The unwelcome tremor was generated by the earth’s plates shifting, grinding, and locking against themselves like the horns of two mountain goats in a battle of survival. This was to become a battle of survival for many.

Now, Juan and his brother, Maria and the twins understood what today had in store for them: an earthquake. The violence of the quake shook pots off their racks and religious ornaments off the walls and shelves. Walls of edifices all over town crumbled down to nothing but rubble, burying its citizens beneath it.

Inside their family-owned shop, Juan and his brother took refuge in the doorway which led to the back room. Juan had once heard his own father tell a story of how someone had survived a quake by standing under the most solid structure of a building—a doorway. They huddled together, holding on to the newly polished wooden structure, speechless and paralyzed by fear. Their eyes widened as the ceiling collapsed, trapping them, crushing them. The anniversary that Juan had so carefully planned for his beloved wife was destroyed forever by the cruelty of Mother Nature. The Fernandez brothers now lay motionless under the structure of the small family empire they had built together. At least they had shared one last moment together, thought Juan as he felt darkness then a bright, warm, welcoming light envelop his entire body.

In the small apartment above, Maria scooped up her two young children with urgency, one under each arm, holding on to them tightly. Surprised and frightened by their mother’s sudden reaction, they cried out, Mama, what is happening?

Quick! Under here! Stay close to me! Maria exclaimed. They obeyed. She shielded her children under her arms as best she could while fighting back tears. Hearing her daughter sobbing, she began to gently hum a lullaby. The noise of destruction was amplified in the tiny kitchen when a large beam fell, crushing the table under which they had taken refuge. Their mother cried out in pain and then was silent. Isabella felt a blow to her own head from the collapsed table, causing her to lose consciousness.

It seemed like an eternity, but eventually the twins reached out to each other. From beneath the rubble that had almost crushed their bodies, their small hands touched. Isabella weakly called out to her brother Marco, who groaned letting her know he was still alive. A warm sensation came over her, trickling across her forehead and resting on her lip. She licked it and recognized its metallic taste. It was blood. Her blood.

A tingling sensation at the back of her head made Isabella try to stretch her neck in an attempt to ease the discomfort. Looking up she saw her mother, Maria, standing freely in the kitchen, almost as if floating above the rubble. She smiled lovingly at her daughter, whispered, I love you, and then was gone.

Isabella knew Marco was still with her, at least for now. She hoped that her father and uncle were safe. The tingling sensation intensified, leading her to worry that perhaps this was a warning that not all was well in the shop downstairs. For now, they would have to wait patiently for any news. Isabella hummed gently to her brother younger by five minutes, to soothe him and encourage him to hold on
