About this ebook

Pain. Hurt. Devastation.

Three words Christina “Sable” Kimber knew more about than any one person should. Finding love was supposed to be the ultimate gift, but for her ¬- it was the beginning of the end. Broken, Sable fights a darkness that seems to be swallowing her whole and she vows to never let another man get close to her again. Alienating herself from family and friends, Sable finds herself giving up on life and leaving the city she had always called home.

Mistrust. Betrayal. Destruction.

Tatum Stone knew hurt. After leaving a toxic relationship, all he wanted was a quiet, simple life for himself and his daughter. Moving across the country, he settled into a small Chicago townhouse and created the exact thing he had always wanted. Finally, Tatum had found his place in the world. A place he could easily call home and for once, everything was perfect - or so he thought.

When a beautiful redhead moves in next door, Tatum’s peace vanishes. He can see the damage of her past as if it were written across her skin. A part of him has an overwhelming need to reach out and help her pick up the pieces; however, another part is screaming for him to run before his deepest secret is revealed.

Can two people that are so similar, yet so different, find love again? Or will the past refuse to stay where it belongs?

    Dedication

This book is dedicated to all the women (and men) out there that have ever had their hearts broken. Always remember, you may bend, but you will never break.

And to the LGBTQ community, never let a damn soul dull your sparkle. Always remember, you are a freaking unicorn!

And to the people who have been with me since the start of the journey – Thank you! Y’all are the true heroes.

And to Skylar, thank you for all the love, support, encouragements, and praises. Thank you for helping me gather my thoughts and for calming my chaos during this book. You are the true MVP. I love you!

    Prologue

All she wanted to do was climb in bed next to him and pass out. She was exhausted. The long hours at work, plus the added driving, it was all starting to get to her. Sable walked in the door and tossed her keys on the counter. Kicking her shoes off, she quietly made her way down the hall.

Smiling to herself, she took a second to lean against the doorframe. There he was. The one person who made all the long hours worth coming home to. Silently, Sable walked into the bedroom and stripped off her clothes. Easing into the bed so she wouldn’t wake him, Sable pulled the covers over herself and sighed deeply when she closed her eyes.

    Buzz. Buzz.

The sound of his phone buzzing against the headboard had her eyes popping open. One. Two. Three. Four. It was obvious someone was trying to get ahold of him.

Who messages at two in the morning?

With a gnawing feeling, Sable grabbed his phone and pressed the button to light up the screen. Staring at it, her stomach fell as she read the preview. She thought she would be sick. Entering the password, she opened the message and read it, but nothing made sense. Scrolling back, she read the earlier conversation, and everything started to fall into place. Everything except Sable’s heart.

She could feel the pain spreading through her chest. It was getting harder to pull in air. Her head started to pound. Climbing out of bed, she walked over to the chair in the corner of the room, and curled up, drawing her legs to her chest.

Scrolling back up, she reread the messages again, hoping she had misunderstood. But she hadn’t. Looking across the room to the sleeping figure lying in her bed, Sable was crushed.

How? She wondered. How did we go from him asking me to marry him three days ago… To this?

As the tears silently fell down her face, Sable stood and redressed. There was no way she would face him without armor. Something to shield her.

Bryan. Sable gave him a small shake. Wake up.

    Hey, beautiful, he smiled sleepily.

Sable wanted to drop it. She wanted to just say ‘fuck it’ and never mention the messages, but she couldn’t. She had more self-worth than that.

I need you to wake up, she told him.

No, he grumbled, reaching out an arm. Come to bed, beautiful.

    Bryan, Sable replied. No.

Sensing that something was wrong, Bryan sat up in the bed, rubbing the sleep from his eyes. Sable wanted to punch him. She wanted to dot his eye. Sadness, hurt, and anger all swirled around, fighting for dominance.

What’s wrong? he asked, looking genuinely concerned.

Would you care to explain this? Sable held up his phone and showed him the messages.

She watched as his face fell.

    I... he stammered.

    You, what?

She is just a friend, he finally answered.

Bryan, Sable tried to hold back the tears. I don’t care that you’re talking to a female. That means nothing to me. However, what I do care about is you are talking about leaving me. Not wanting to be with me.

That’s not what I said! he countered.

Really? Sable replied. "Let’s see ‘I think I may be holding her back’. Or, ‘I have to get out of this relationship because I don’t want to stay here in this town’. I don’t know, Bryan. What does that sound like to you?"

I meant it to mean that I think I am holding you back from moving forward with your job, Bryan explained. And you already know that I don’t want to live in Houston for the rest of my life.

Yes! Sable shouted. But pardon me for thinking, oh I don’t know, that we would be leaving together!

Sable, Bryan climbed out of bed. Please, calm down, beautiful.

Don’t! Sable held up a hand. Don’t call me that.

Why not? he looked confused. I always call you beautiful.

You lost that right, Sable seethed. When you messaged another person about our relationship. Especially, since all of this shit is new to me. How the fuck did we go from you asking me to marry you just a few days ago, to this?

Christina, Bryan tried to reach for her. Please.

Get out, Sable demanded, moving out of his reach. Pack your shit and get the hell out of my house.

    Christina.

    Now.

Sable turned away from him and walked out of the room. She couldn’t look at him. She couldn’t let him see her breaking inside. She couldn’t let him see the damage he had done. There was no way in hell, ever, she would ever allow him to see her weak.

    Chapter One

    Sable

    Five months later…

Standing there as everyone gathered around the happy couples, Sable fought to hold back the tears. She was happy for her sisters. She was so ecstatic that each of them had found their happiness. But a part of her, one she would never admit to, hated it.

    Why not me?

    What’s so wrong with me?

So much had happened in the last couple of weeks, that Sable was having a really hard time holding it together in front of everyone. It seemed to be one thing after another. Scarlet announced to the family that she was pregnant, Sapphire finally got married and broadcasted that she and Tank were also having a little one, and now Piper was showing off the flashy ring on her finger. And here she was, odd man, or woman, out.

She stood there just going through the motions. Nodding when she needed to nod. Smiling when she needed to smile. Laughing when she needed to laugh. However, all she wanted to do was run.

I need to get out of here… Far from here.

Sable didn’t want to taint her sisters. They were happy and that is truly what she wanted for them. But right now, she couldn’t handle it. She was still fighting the demons in her head and in moments like this, they seemed to swarm out of control.

Sneaking out the door, Sable headed for her bike. She needed to feel the air on her face. She needed the freedom. Pulling the key from her pocket, she started the blacked-out monster. Climbing on his back, she walked it out of its spot and turned to leave.

Sable! Scarlet came running towards her.

What? Sable gave her best smile.

    Where are you going?

    For a ride.

    But everyone is here…

I know, Sable held onto the smile. Go have fun.

Christina? Sable saw her concern. What’s wrong?

I just need to go. Sable was barely holding it together. Any longer and she would crack.

I love you. Scarlet leaned in and gave Sable a hug.

I.. she cleared her throat. I love you, too.

Sable twisted the throttle on the bike and took off down the driveway. Turning left, she had no idea where she was riding to, she just knew she had to go.

Following the twists and turns, Sable let the wind blow through her hair. She needed to figure out what she was going to do. With every step she took forward, it felt like something would knock her back two.

She still missed him. She missed the long hours of riding in the car, with the music blasting, going nowhere in particular. She missed the hours spent talking and laughing. And all that did, was piss her off.

Of course, I still miss him. He won’t stop messaging me!

Since the day Bryan left, there wasn’t a single one that passed that Sable hadn’t received a message from him. But, all the ‘I love yous’ and ‘I miss yous’ wouldn’t fix what had already happened. He had broken her trust, right along with her heart and there was no chance in hell that Sable would give him the power to do it again.

For months, she had held on to hope that he would get his head out of his ass and realize that he’d fucked up. But it never happened. Bryan was too stuck on the fact that Sable made more money, had a successful career, and he had none of that. No matter how many times she told him, money and status meant nothing to her – he wouldn’t listen. And now, Sable was done. Bryan made his choices, and she made hers. All that was left, was for her to figure out what to do with herself.

    * * *

As night began to fall, Sable pulled into the small driveway of her tiny cottage-like home. She had always loved it here. But recently, the walls felt like they were closing in on her. She needed out. She needed a fresh start. Someplace where nobody knew her name. Some place where her last name meant nothing. Some place where Bryan wasn’t.

Climbing off the bike, she walked up the short walk that would lead to her door and stopped in her tracks. What are you doing here?

I just want to talk to you. Bryan stepped off the darkened porch.

Bryan, Sable put her hands on her hips. I already told you, I’m done.

    Please, he begged. Just listen.

Sable stood there quietly. A part of her was screaming for her to just listen to him. To cave in and let him follow her inside.

I’m so sorry, he continued. I know, I fucked up. I know, I should have talked to you about my concerns, instead of someone else. I was stupid and scared. I was falling in love with you faster than I thought possible and it scared the shit out of me.

Sable understood that feeling. It had scared her, too. But I didn’t go behind his back to sabotage it.

I want you, he continued. I want to spend the rest of my life with you. I want to see us together in fifty years.

A small part of the wall she had spent the last few months building, started to crumble.

I know I hurt you, he went on. And I’m sorry. I should have never let what my mom said get into my head.

And that was it. The moment it all clicked, and her anger came flying to the surface again.

Stop. She held up her hand. Walking past him, Sable climbed the two steps and stood on her porch.

    Please, Christina!

Bryan, Sable’s anger was hot. Do you have any idea the damage you caused? Any?

When he just stood there, not saying a word, Sable knew the answer. He had no damn clue.

Exactly, she said. You have no idea what you’ve done. No idea what you are even apologizing for.

Yes, I do. He defended. I hurt you. And for that I am sorry.

    How?

    What?

    How did you hurt me?

    Umm.

Shaking her head, Sable’s heart broke a little more. I’m done. And with that, she unlocked the door and went inside.

Flipping the deadbolt in place, Sable tossed her keys on the counter and went to the fridge. Pulling out a soda, she made her way to the living room. What an asshole!

    She wanted to
