An Overview of the Low Carb Diet
A low carb diet will restrict the amount of carbohydrates you eat, asking you to focus instead on lean proteins, healthy fats and high fiber vegetables that have little sugar. There are dozens of varieties of low carb diets on the market. Some of them will give you a specific number of carbohydrates that you are not to exceed and others will have a strict list of foods you absolutely may not eat. Remember that a low carb diet is not the same as a no carb diet. You still want to get a few complex carbohydrates into your system in the forms of leafy green veggies and fruits like berries and melon. It's best to simply be mindful of the carbs you are eating and to choose different food groups when planning meals and snacks.
Why Follow a Low Carb Diet?
Most people choose to adopt a low carb eating plan when they want to lose weight. If you have diabetes or your doctor has diagnosed you as pre-diabetic, a low carb diet may be prescribed. That's because this type of eating plan will reduce the levels of glucose that's held in your blood. Insulin levels will drop when you reduce the amount of carbohydrates you eat. People who are overweight also benefit from low carb diets because their blood pressure goes down. High blood pressure is one of the leading causes of strokes and it also contributes to heart disease. The change in your metabolism when you focus on low carb eating can help bring down your blood pressure and allow your heart to function better. This is especially true for people struggling with obesity.

Proteins and fats are the focus when you're enjoying a low carb lifestyle. You can fill up on all the meats you like, whether that's ground beef, steak, pork chops, chicken, turkey, veal, or bison.
