It’s been twenty years since her seminal first book Sex and the City and its hit HBO TV series made New York Observer columnist Candace Bushnell an international household name. Now she returns to Grove, and her original incisively-observant form to draw an exacting, uproarious, and moving look at the middle aged love and dating habits of the privileged.
Set between the Upper East Side of Manhattan and a weekend enclave known as The Village, Bushnell’s Is There Still Sex follows a group of girlfriends as they move through their forties and fifties and experience marriage, divorce, motherhood, and dating. As always, Bushnell’s gimlet eye hones in on mating trends and types—The New Bicycle Boys, The Cubbing Experience, and MAM (Middle Age Madness) are just a few examined here.
Unafraid to put her research into practice, Bushnell tries out many of the things she documents (from Tinder dates to an insanely priced face cream promising restorative youth) and gives us a satirical and deeply funny fly on the wall look at the lifestyles of the rich.
Bushnell is a trailblazing social anthropologist who transformed Western attitudes to sex and dating with Sex and the City. Her enduring influence has been the subject of many profiles and she has been compared to Austen, Wharton, and Parker.
Sex and the City, Four Blondes, and One Fifth Avenue were NYT Bestsellers. Sex and The City (1996) has bookscanned 286,605 in paperback alone; and Four Blondes, Trading Up, One Fifth Avenue, and The Carrie Diaries (2010) have each bookscanned close to 150,000 copies in Cloth.
Bushnell was the winner of a Matrix Award for books (other winners include Joan Didion and Amy Tan)
