About this ebook

The author wrote this novel while he was studying at Leeds University. The book was first published as a part of the influential Heinemann African Writers Series.

The title of the novel is said to have been taken from the Gospel According to St. John, 12:24. There are several different stories woven together in the main plot. They take place during the time of emergency when Kenya was on the verge of attaining independence from the British colonial rule.

Mugo, the central character, happens to have been living with a burden of a secret. The story describes the preparations that his home village makes for the celebration of the Independence Day called Uhuru Day.
